Equality Charter School is an innovative, high-performing, and growing charter school serving the Bronx community. We are currently seeking a Director of Instruction to support our middle school campus. At Equality Charter Middle School (ECMS), we pride ourselves on being a true community school—one that provides scholars with a well-rounded educational experience grounded in academic rigor, social-emotional awareness, and love.
General Description of the Role
At Equality Charter Middle School, we’re not just looking for a Director of Instruction—we’re looking for a builder, a listener, a problem-solver, and a champion for both scholars and staff.
This is a school-wide instructional leadership role, not limited to any one content area. We are intentionally seeking strong instructional leaders from any background—math, science, humanities, arts, or beyond. What matters most is your ability to coach, lead, and elevate teaching and learning across disciplines. We value -strategic, adaptable educators who can see the big picture, connect ideas across content areas, and adapt to the evolving needs of our scholars.
This role sits at the heart of a living, evolving instructional program that responds to the strengths, challenges, and aspirations of our scholars. As Director of Instruction, you will lead, coach, and inspire instructional staff—ensuring that every classroom is engaging, rigorous, and responsive.
We are looking for a leader who wants their voice heard—and who is equally committed to listening to and elevating the voices of others. Someone who thrives in a collaborative environment, brings energy and creativity to the work, and understands that great schools are built through strong relationships, shared ownership, and a willingness to grow.
This role is grounded in eight essential areas of impact:
- Supporting the implementation and utilization of meaningful, scholar-centered curriculum
- Providing continuous, actionable coaching and support to teachers
- Leading professional learning that is relevant, practical, and inspiring
- Recruiting and hiring diverse, mission-aligned educators (across all content areas—we prioritize the right fit and mindset)
- Observing, evaluating, and developing instructional staff with clarity and care
- Driving school-wide priorities while supporting the broader community
- Collaborating deeply within MTSS structures to ensure all scholars thrive
What Success Looks Like
Success in this role means showing up as a team-first leader—someone who contributes proactively, reflects often, and is always learning.
It looks like:
- Building a culture where teachers feel supported, challenged, and valued
- Creating classrooms that are responsive, engaging, and aligned to scholars' needs
- Actively partnering with families and community members as co-educators
- Leading with integrity, respect, and a deep commitment to our mission
- Understanding that our “customers”—scholars, families, and staff—deserve exceptional care, communication, and follow-through
Most importantly, success means ensuring that every member of your team knows:
Their voice matters, their work is seen, and their growth is a shared priority.
Preferred Qualifications
- Extensive teaching experience and a track record of impact
- Strong leadership and coaching experience
- Experience supporting rigorous academic standards (Math Regents knowledge is a plus, not a requirement)
- Familiarity with Next Generation Learning Standards (and ideally NY Science Standards)
- The ability to juggle multiple priorities while keeping people at the center
If you’re an experienced teacher or leader who wants to build something meaningful, be heard, and make others feel valued in the process, and you bring this lens to instructional leadership, this is the work—and the community—for you.
