Job Description

Responsibilities

The candidate selected for this role will be working at Orion Space Solutions, a subsidiary of Arcfield. The engineer selected for this role will have a broad range of responsibilities to execute. In general, these responsibilities will encompass the range of thermal design & analysis tasks required to support the development of small satellites, cube sats, payloads, electronic units, GSE, and other sensing systems.

This role will require the engineer to work cross-functionally and identify needs from other engineering and programmatic groups. In addition, they will be required to tackle open-ended analysis problems that require pro-active communication and problem-solving.

In general, the engineer will be required to support the following tasks:

  • Design thermal control systems for spacecraft and payloads
  • Detailed passive and active thermal control analysis
  • Provide design input to ensure electronic units close thermally
  • Execute thermal analyses & design:
    • Perform first-principles calculations throughout the design cycle
    • Execute FEM thermal models (ie Thermal Desktop) to support detailed analyses
    • Generate and present analysis documents to both internal and external parties
    • Provide feedback and input to cross-functional teams
    • Provide thermal input to help guide preliminary & detailed designs
    • Provide thermal feedback on how to correct any design non-compliances
  • Provide thermal input during test planning phases and process review
  • Support & design environmental test campaigns
  • Proactively identify inefficiencies or issues with analysis processes and propose / implement solutions
  • Specify thermal hardware and support quoting efforts

This specific opening is looking for an individual who has enough experience to operate autonomously, and requires little guidance to define their own analysis tasks based on high-level programmatic requests.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant engineering or computation field plus 8-10 years, MS plus 6-8 years or PhD plus 3-5 years professional working experience in thermal engineering positions
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance
  • 5+ years of professional working experience in the space industry
  • Experience in Thermal Desktop, proficient in basic thermal principles
  • CAD Modeling Experience

Preferred:

  • Matlab
