Cyber and Physical Security Specialist

Scope of Responsibilities


The Cyber and Physical Security Specialist serves a vital dual role in protecting both the digital and physical infrastructure of Kalamazoo Public Schools. This position is split equally between monitoring the district’s cybersecurity posture and the hands-on management of physical security systems, including the back-end servers and the physical hardware for IP-based surveillance cameras and electronic door access.


Performance Responsibilities


  1. Monitor cybersecurity dashboards, platforms, and security logs to identify and mitigate potential cyber threats or unauthorized access.
  2. Lead the initial response to security alerts, conducting analysis and coordinating recovery efforts for compromised accounts or systems.
  3. Manage firewalls and endpoint protection to ensure student data privacy and CIPA compliance.
  4. Perform regular scans of the district’s servers and cloud environments to patch security gaps.
  5. Perform hands-on installation, configuration, and replacement of IP cameras, intercoms, and door controller hardware across all district facilities.
  6. Manage the back-end infrastructure for the camera network, including server maintenance, storage retention, and user permissions.
  7. Administer the electronic door lock database, badge provisioning, and integration with emergency lockdown protocols.
  8. Diagnose and resolve hardware-to-software communication issues and physical cable connectivity problems for security devices.
  9. Conduct regular site visits to ensure all physical hardware is positioned correctly and functioning per district safety protocols.
  10. Other duties as assigned.

   


                  Minimum Qualifications


  1. Bachelor’s degree in IT, Cybersecurity, or a related field; or 6+ years of professional experience working in Information Technology.
  2. CompTIA Network+ Certification or equivalent certification required upon hire.
  3. CompTIA Security+ Certification or equivalent certification required upon hire.
  4. Ability to travel frequently between various KPS buildings and campus locations.
  5. Lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 lbs (e.g., servers, UPS batteries, or large outdoor camera housings).
  6. Work comfortably at heights, including the use of ladders, step stools, or lifts to replace, adjust, or reset camera hardware and door sensors.
  7. Utilize basic hand and power tools (drills, crimpers, testers) for mounting hardware and terminating network cabling.
  8. Work before and after regularly scheduled work times as needed.
  9. Evidence of a desirable work record (high accuracy, low absenteeism, flexibility, and good performance).
  10. Spend extended periods standing, walking, or reaching overhead during system installations or site audits.
  11. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  12. Possess a high level of organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and effectively in stressful situations.
  13. Maintain integrity and an ethical approach to duties and responsibilities.
