RF/Radar Engineer - Principal/Senior Principal
Phased n Research is seeking a Principal or Senior RF/Radar Engineer to support U.S. Army radar Modeling and Simulation (M&S) programs. You will serve as the radar domain expert on a team of M&S software engineers, providing the systems engineering depth, performance analysis, and technical credibility needed to ensure simulation tools accurately represent real-world radar behavior. This role is less about writing simulation code and more about knowing what the simulation needs to get right, and why.
Primary Customer:
- This effort directly supports the Program Manager Search, Track, Acquire, Radiate, and Eliminate (PM STARE).
Radar Systems & Performance Analysis:
- Define and assess radar system performance across operationally representative scenarios including detection, tracking, discrimination, waveform behavior, and electronic protection.
- Develop radar performance analyses and trade studies to inform Army program requirements and architecture decisions.
- Evaluate M&S outputs against analytical predictions and empirical data; identify simulation fidelity gaps and communicate findings clearly to the software development team.
- Develop and validate radar signal processing algorithms and waveform designs, providing the software team with well-defined, implementable specifications.
- Assess radar performance in challenging environments including dense clutter, ECM, and multi-target engagements.
M&S Support & Validation:
- Provide radar domain expertise to support the development, validation, and accreditation of radar M&S tools for U.S. Army customers.
- Author and review model specifications, simulation validation plans, and V&V documentation grounded in radar physics and systems engineering principles.
- Use MATLAB and Python to prototype radar algorithms, verify signal processing behavior, and produce reference outputs for software team validation.
- Support integration and performance testing of simulation systems by defining acceptance criteria and reviewing test results from a radar systems perspective.
Program & Customer Support:
- Serve as the senior radar technical resource in supporting leadership with engagements with U.S. Army customers, supporting TIMs, design reviews, and program milestones.
- Translate customer requirements into clear radar system specifications and M&S development tasks for the engineering team.
- Produce technical documentation, requirements artifacts, and briefings that demonstrate program progress and support government reviews.
- Mentor junior engineers on radar systems fundamentals and M&S methodology.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or closely related STEM field.
- 10+ years of directly relevant radar or RF systems experience.
- Active Secret clearance; eligibility and willingness to pursue Top Secret/SCI.
- Demonstrated experience in radar system design, performance analysis, or algorithm and waveform development.
- Proficiency in MATLAB and/or Python for radar signal processing, simulation, or algorithm prototyping.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; proven ability to present technical radar concepts to both engineering teams and government customers.
- Ability to work independently, drive technical tasks to completion, and operate effectively in fast-paced, mission-driven programs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Mathematics or related STEM field.
- Direct relevant radar or RF systems experience.
- Experience with C++/CUDA software optimization and high performance computing.
- Active TS/SCI clearance.
- Prior experience supporting U.S. Army radar programs or other DoD M&S efforts.
- Background in missile defense, air defense, or ground-based radar systems.
- Working knowledge of C++ in a radar or signal processing context.
- Familiarity with software development workflows including version control, CMake, or containerization tools such as Docker or Podman.
