Summary

 

The Engineering Intern provides an opportunity for students who are currently pursuing an engineering education to get hands on experience working with District Energy. There is a special focus on end-to-end solutions combining heating and cooling systems or Energy Utilities and managing customers' steam production, cooling, compressed air, vacuum, and power networks. As an Engineering Intern you will be called upon to support a variety of engineering activities, conduct inventory of distribution equipment, perform data entry, and populate the information into the data distribution system. This is a part-time position. This position is located in Cambridge, MA. The compensation range for this position is $17.00-19.00 per hour.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Walk down plant systems and develop “As Built” operations Piping & Instrument Diagrams (P&ID’s)
  • Final product will be an ACAD drawing generated as part of this effort
  • System & component identification will be integrated in this process
  • Support Plant Engineering project design, project management, reporting
  • Ability and willingness to learn plant and steam, distribution systems, operations, and maintenance activities
  • Provide operations engineering as needed for plant & distribution performance optimization
  • Weekly meetings with plant staff to provide updates on progress

 

Basic Qualifications

 

  • Currently enrolled in a four-year undergraduate degree program focused on engineering, sustainability, environmental science, computer science, or related fields
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. and not require sponsorship now or in the future

 

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft suite of products, AutoCAD, and desire to learn and leverage new technology platforms

Physical Requirements 

 

  • Must submit to company sponsored pre-employment physical exam and drug screening
  • Amount of time spent – Standing 25%, Walking 25%, Bending and Stooping 50%
  • Must be able to lift up to and including 50lbs, maneuver objects in excess of 100 pounds, and climb ladders as required
  • Spends 100% of time in maintenance environment
  • May need to work outside in inclement weather conditions
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures
  • Equipment noise greater than 85 db. and hazards such as high-pressure steam lines and rotating equipment
  • Working with and thereby exposed to water treatment chemicals
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment such as hardhat, safety glasses, safety shoes, hearing protection, and other protective gear required to perform job duties
  • Stoop, kneel, or crouch, enter confined spaces and work on scaffolds or other elevated areas.  Will be required to use ladders and stairs
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. Requires close visual observation to detect process non-conformance and machine malfunction
