Job Description

Position Summary

The Senior Building Trades Supervisor is responsible for coordinating, managing, and supervising general carpentry, painting, masonry, door, lock, roof, and glass-related maintenance and repairs for all campus buildings, facilities, and housing. This role ensures all work is ticketed, scheduled, and completed in alignment with operational protocols, safety standards, and college policy. This role serves as a key mentor to the Building Trades Supervisor and ensures continuity of operations across all campus facilities and housing. This position must be available for emergency maintenance calls on evenings/weekends and flexible for additional hours as required.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary mentor to the Building Trades Supervisor, providing professional guidance, technical expertise, and oversight of their management of the painting and masonry teams.

  • Manage and receive work orders (carpentry, roofing, windows, doors, and locks) through the facilities operations ticketing system.

  • Evaluate complex projects, determine staffing requirements, and manage the procurement of equipment and supplies for the entire department.

  • Schedule assignments, and monitor the progress and quality of work to ensure timely completion.

  • Coordinate with the Building Trades Supervisor to ensure that painting and masonry workloads align with broader department goals and campus priorities.

  • Supervise a team of skilled tradespeople, this includes hiring, training, evaluating performance, approving time off, and providing effective communication and conflict resolution.

  • Ensure all trade activities adhere to Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) guidelines and college policies.

  • Order and purchase equipment and supplies in alignment with purchasing policies and coordinate the reconciliation of expenses.

  • Coordinate work schedules with other maintenance trade groups and outside contractors to maximize efficiency.

  • Maintain detailed records of work requests, completed projects, and related expenses to observe trends and plan future maintenance.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • High school diploma, vocational training, or equivalent.

  • 10 years of carpentry and painting experience, along with prior supervisory or project management experience.

  • Possess a valid driver’s license for at least 2 years. 

  • Highly skilled in the use and maintenance of various hand and power tools. 

  • Deep knowledge of carpentry methods, mathematics, and paint types.

  • Experience using office technology and systems to communicate and track work orders.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work cooperatively with others while accepting direction from management.

  • Ability to lift 10–25 lbs. frequently and up to 75 lbs. occasionally. 

  • Ability to push/pull up to 100 lbs. 

  • Ability to maintain a high level of physical activity, including extended periods of standing and navigating a dynamic workspace.

Preferred knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Experience working in a unionized environment.

  • Experience working in higher education.

  • Experience with using systems to track work orders. 

Compensation

The starting annual base salary range for this position is $77,300- $100,500 (USD)
