Substitute School Nurse

Position Summary:

The Substitute School Nurse provides temporary health services to students and staff in the absence of the regular school nurse. This role is essential in maintaining a healthy and safe school environment, managing medical issues, and promoting overall wellness.

Key Responsibilities:

Health Services Delivery:

• Administer first aid and emergency care to students and staff.
• Manage chronic health conditions, including medication administration and monitoring.
• Provide care for acute illnesses and injuries according to school policy.

Health Assessment:

• Conduct health assessments and screenings (vision, hearing, scoliosis, etc.).
• Evaluate and monitor students for symptoms of illness or injury.
• Maintain accurate and confidential health records.

Health Education:

• Educate students and staff on health-related topics, including nutrition, hygiene, and disease prevention.
• Provide counseling and support to students on health-related issues.

Communication and Collaboration:

• Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding student health issues.
• Collaborate with school staff, including teachers and administrators, to support student health and safety.
• Serve as a liaison between the school, families, and healthcare providers.

Compliance and Documentation:

• Ensure compliance with state and federal health regulations and school policies.
• Document all care provided and maintain student health records in accordance with privacy laws and regulations.
• Report communicable diseases as required by law.

Emergency Preparedness:

• Assist in the development and implementation of emergency health care plans.
• Participate in emergency drills and preparedness activities.

Qualifications:

Education and Certification:

• Current Registered Nurse (RN) license.
• Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and CPR.
• Additional certifications relevant to school nursing (preferred).

Experience:

• Previous experience in school nursing or pediatric care (preferred).
• Experience in emergency care or acute care settings (a plus).

Skills:

• Strong clinical skills and knowledge of common pediatric health issues.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in emergency situations.
• Proficient in maintaining detailed and accurate health records.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to perform tasks involving physical activity, including lifting and assisting students.
• Capability to respond quickly in emergency situations.

Work Environment:

• Typical school environment with occasional exposure to infectious diseases.
• Requires mobility within the school premises to respond to student needs.

Terms of Employment:

• Position is on an as-needed basis to cover for the regular school nurse during absences.
• Hours may vary depending on the school schedule and specific needs
