    Job Description

    Job Summary:   Under the direction of the principal, the responsibilities of the reading teacher is for providing direct instruction to students, individually or in small groups, to enable students to develop literacy skills. As a literacy leader, the incumbent will provide coaching, support, and guidance to teachers in best practices for literacy instruction.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • NYSD Certification in Literacy/Reading

    Primary Activities 

    • Deliver explicit, systematic reading instruction based on the Science of Reading to small groups or individuals, focusing on phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
    • Administer literacy screenings and diagnostic assessments (e.g., DIBELS, PSI, PASI, ) to identify at-risk students and monitor progress.
    • Partner with K�3 classroom teachers to integrate research-based reading strategies into the general curriculum and model best practices in "push-in" or "pull-out" settings.
    • Develop and implement individualized reading plans for students who require Tier 2 or Tier 3 support within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) or Response to Intervention (RTI) framework.
    • Review student achievement and assist with placing students in appropriate reading and writing intervention and support services.
    • Collaborate with teachers to identify the literacy needs of students, to set learning goals and targets, and to problem solve with teachers to develop best practices for continuous academic growth of students in literacy.
    • Assist teachers with the collection of data, analysis of data results and supports the sharing of findings with all staff.
    • Communicate regularly with parents regarding student progress and provide strategies for supporting literacy development at home.
    • Lead or participate in school-wide literacy initiatives, professional development workshops, and data-review meetings (e.g., Child Study, MTSS and/or IEP meetings).
    • Deliver small-group or one-on-one interventions focused on spelling patterns, orthographic mapping, and phoneme-grapheme correspondences (connecting sounds to letters).
    • Provide interventions that target sentence construction, sentence expansion, and paragraph development, including the use of sentence frames and starters.
    • Implement kinesthetic techniques for letter formation, air writing, and tactile spelling to aid memory.
    • Use written response to reading (e.g., retelling, summarizing, visualizing) to build reading comprehension.
    • Maintain and submit accurate and up-to-date management records of all students' progress.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Work Environment

    •  The noise level in the work environment is typical for a school environment.
    • Work generally performed indoors with limited outside supervision of students.

    Salary Range
    $62,306-135,587 (2025/2026 [2026/2027 TBD])
