About the Position
We are seeking an energetic, creative, and compassionate Director of Recreation & Volunteer Services to lead the development and implementation of comprehensive resident-centered programs in our Skilled Nursing Facility. This leader is responsible for ensuring that recreational programming enhances quality of life, supports functional abilities, and aligns with federal and state regulatory standards. The role also oversees all aspects of volunteer recruitment, training, scheduling, and engagement.

Key Responsibilities
Recreation & Life Enrichment Program Management
  • Develop, plan, and implement a meaningful and engaging monthly recreation calendar that supports physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and spiritual well‑being.
  • Ensure programs meet residents’ individualized needs based on assessments, care plans, and resident preferences.
  • Conduct recreation assessments and contribute to interdisciplinary care plan meetings and MDS documentation as required.
  • Coordinate and facilitate group and 1:1 activities, including specialized programming for residents with dementia or behavioral health challenges.
  • Oversee maintenance of recreation equipment, supplies, and designated programming spaces.
Leadership & Staff Management
  • Supervise, coach, and schedule recreation staff to ensure high-quality programming coverage 7 days/week, as required.
  • Provide ongoing training and performance evaluations for all recreation and volunteer staff.
  • Establish and maintain departmental policies, procedures, and quality improvement initiatives.
Volunteer Services Management
  • Recruit, onboard, train, and supervise volunteers for various facility programs and resident support roles.
  • Maintain volunteer records, schedules, recognition initiatives, and compliance with facility policies.
  • Build partnerships with community organizations, schools, and faith-based groups to expand volunteer engagement.
Regulatory Compliance & Documentation
  • Ensure compliance with CMS, DOH, and state regulations, including requirements under F679 (Activities).
  • Maintain accurate documentation of resident participation, progress notes, assessments, and attendance records.
  • Participate in surveys and respond to surveyors regarding recreation and volunteer service standards.
Resident & Family Engagement
  • Foster positive relationships with residents and families to support individualized care.
  • Promote resident-centered culture and advocate for resident choice and autonomy.
  • Organize facility-wide events, celebrations, and intergenerational programs.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, Human Services, or related field required (CTRS or eligible preferred).
  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience in recreation within a Skilled Nursing Facility or healthcare setting.
  • Supervisory experience required; strong leadership and people-management skills.
  • Knowledge of MDS 3.0, care planning, and regulatory requirements for SNF activities departments.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, creativity, and ability to engage older adults with varying physical and cognitive abilities.
  • Ability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed to support programming.
