Title: Special Education Coordinator 6-8
Reports To: Director of Special Education
Classification: Certified
Work Year: 181Days
Salary: Teacher Salary Scale
Evaluator: Special Education Director or Designee
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Professional Educator License general education or LBS I (PK-21)
2. Minimum of 3 years teaching experience

1. Master’s degree in Education
Knowledge and Abilities: As a member of a team we shall provide leadership and collaboration
for the effective and efficient provision of services for all children especially those receiving
special education. We shall advocate for positive and preventative interventions to increase life
choices for the social, emotional, and academic growth for the success of all students. Each
individual child will be valued for their diversity and the contributions they can make to
enhance the community.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Coordinate screening with enrollment coordinator to include Child Find, Referrals for
evaluations
2. Complete reports, records, and documentation as required
3. Advocate for special education students, parents, and staff
4. Work collaboratively with team members to problem solve district/classroom/individual
issues
5. Provide information on the reauthorization of IDEA, changes involved and support
implementation
6. Promote consistency among the specialized education programs through-out the district
7. Coordinate programs in specialized areas and fulfill responsibilities of a team member
under federal and state special education law and regulations
8. Coordinate communication processes to facilitate interaction among teachers in
different schools within the District and to guarantee the sharing of ideas gained by
individual teachers and coordinators through conferences attended, workshop
experiences, and content courses
9. Consult with parents and school staff on academic, social, and emotional performance
and other issues related to student progress
10. Set up IEP meetings, oversee IEP development, and monitor student progress

11. Act as a liaison between staff, parents, administrators, directors, departments,
counselors, paraeducators, and other relevant school personnel
12. We shall be knowledgeable of trends, laws, rules, or regulations in our individual area of
expertise
13. Assist teacher in identifying and implementing preventative strategies based on best
practices
14. Investigate and assist in implementing the Response To Intervention Model for
identifying and placing students in the learning disabilities program
15. Attend training, support staff, distribute information regarding Illinois Alternative
Assessment
16. Observe and collect data on student performance
17. Coordinate meetings to complete Functional Behavioral Assessments and Behavior
Intervention Plans with the team
18. Provide assistance in crisis situations
19. Serve as the case manager for non-public education students receiving consultative
services
20. Supports para-educators
21. Assists in attending meetings between school and community agencies (Transitions,
Counseling, Blessing Behavioral Clinic, etc.)
22. Keep 6-8 teachers informed of updates from the federali, state, or district level
23. Assists in transitioning from K-5’s to Junior High and from Junior High to the High School
24. Communicate with building secretaries when changes occur in students’ programming
25. Complete paperwork for “Request for Para Educator Support”
26. Assist in keeping the web based IEP up to date
27. Assist with para assignments and duties during the day
28. Reports to and is supervised by the Director of Special Education
29. Trained in CPI
30. Other duties assigned by the Director of Special Education
