The Assistant Supervisor is a producing field leader and plays a vital role in maintaining highways, rights-of-way, and public spaces through mowing, litter abatement, and grounds maintenance. This position performs all functions related to both mowing operations and ground support to meet contractual and safety standards. The Assistant Supervisor reports directly to the Area Operations Manager and serves as a key support role in daily field execution.
JOB DUTIES:
- Serve as driver and working field leader of assigned crew.
- Lead by example through productivity, professionalism, and accountability.
- Operate tractors equipped with stand on zero-turn 60" mowers, off-road utility vehicles for roadside and right-of-way mowing.
- Collect litter and debris along highways, rights-of-way, medians, and public spaces.
- Perform edging, trimming, and general grounds maintenance to ensure clean, safe environments.
- Use handheld tools and powered equipment such as trimmers, blowers, and edgers.
- Safely load and unload equipment from trailers and assist with transport to job sites.
- Enforce required use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Immediately correct unsafe behaviors or conditions and report concerns to Area Operations Manager.
- Assist in training new crew members in safe and efficient work practices.
- Promote teamwork, reliability, accountability, and professionalism.
- Support IBS's fair chance employment mission while maintaining performance expectations.
- Work collaboratively with team members to complete mowing, litter collection, and maintenance tasks efficiently.
- Accurately complete daily work reports and submit operational data via mobile device or paper log.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Work Environment
Work is performed outdoors along highways, shoulders, medians, and rights-of-way. Working Leads are regularly exposed to traffic, noise, weather conditions, fumes, airborne particles, and physically demanding terrain. This role requires consistent field presence and active physical labor.

Qualifications
- Experience operating stand on zero-turn mowers, and/or power equipment.
- Minimum one (1) year of leadership or crew lead experience, preferred
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Ability to safely operate company vehicles and trailers
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Ability to walk up to 5 miles per day over uneven terrain
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly
- Strong communication skills, reliability, and sound judgment
- Familiar with Microsoft Office suite
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in outdoor public works, highway maintenance, or right-of-way services
- Experience working under performance-based service contracts
- Bilingual (English/Spanish)
- High School Diploma or GED
Physical demands
- Regularly required to stand, walk, reach, handle tools/equipment, and climb into/out of large vehicles.
- Frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions for extended periods.
- Must be able to walk over rough, uneven, or steep terrain.
- Vision requirements include close, distance, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
