- Possess Autism Authorization (if not already embedded in credential)
- Possess EL Authorization, CLAD, or BCLAD
- Master's Degree in Special Education is desirable.
- Classroom teaching experience in general education and special education is desirable.
- Bilingual ability is desirable.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
- Provides a basic core program for students consistent with state education code requirements.
- Instructs students with learning disabilities using appropriate techniques, equipment, instructional materials and supplies in accordance with the Individualized Education Program for each student.
- Remediates identified specific learning disabilities.
- Develops with each student realistic long and short range goals in learning areas, allowing for the reduction of learning gaps and providing for continued development in areas of pupil strengths.
- Works closely with other special education staff members, e.g. psychologist, program specialist, speech therapist, adaptive physical education teacher, in the assessment process, program planning and to ensure implementation of the I.E.P.
- Directs paraprofessionals and classroom volunteers.
- Communicates with parents as necessary as a means of effectively coordinating the efforts of the school and the home in the improvement of the overall program for the student.
- Collaborates with general education classroom teachers to provide successful integration of the students into the general education program.
- Evaluates student performance, keeps up-to-date records of individual student's progress and recommends revision of the I.E.P., as appropriate; modifies I.E.P. accordingly.
- Creates and maintains an effective learning environment in which a positive self-image and self-help activities are stressed.
- Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
- Provides a functional and attractive classroom environment.
- Integrates instructional strategies with appropriate technology.
