PURPOSE OF POSITION: The Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) provides clinical leadership and oversight for Renew’s medication management services, ensuring high-quality psychiatric and behavioral health care in accordance with professional standards and regulatory requirements. The position operates with a high degree of clinical autonomy and provides oversight to the assigned medical support staff, while collaborating with internal teams and community partners to advance coordinated, person-centered care.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This position differs from other advanced practice and clinical roles in that it combines department oversight responsibilities with direct clinical service delivery. The role contributes to the development, implementation, and review of agency policies, competencies, plans, and participates in the preparation and administration of the department budget.

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: This job description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. It is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities and duties required.

  • Supervises Medical Assistants and oversees daily operations of the medication management program to ensure efficient, safe, and compliant service delivery.
  • Prescribes medications in accordance with Washington State law, standards of practice, and ARNP scope to support appropriate treatment and symptom stabilization.
  • Consults with pharmacists and primary medical providers to coordinate medication management and ensure continuity of care.
  • Refers individuals to primary medical providers or specialty care when medical needs fall outside the ARNP scope to support comprehensive treatment.
  • Reviews and interprets laboratory reports, following up on significant findings to guide clinical decision-making and maintain client safety.
  • Participates in medical services operations, including triage, scheduling, medication inventory, prescription refill processes, and provider support, to maintain smooth clinic workflows.
  • Provides employee health services by coordinating flu shot clinics, offering infectious-disease education, answering clinical health questions, and assisting with vitals or system reviews as needed to promote staff wellness.
  • Coordinates medication-related activities, including calling in prescriptions, managing refill requests, dispensing sample medications per policy, and assisting pharmacies, to ensure accurate and timely medication access.
  • Monitors individuals for medication side effects and other medical symptoms, communicating concerns and implementing follow-up as clinically indicated.
  • Screens lab findings and consults with prescribers regarding abnormal results to support timely medical intervention.
  • Provides education and consultation to families and support networks to enhance understanding of client needs and promote effective care involvement.
  • Participates in care coordination meetings and consultations to align treatment planning and improve client outcomes.
  • Ensures documentation and medical records comply with WAC, RCW, contracts, and agency standards to maintain audit readiness and regulatory compliance.
  • Maintains collaborative working relationships with community partners, including hospitals, law enforcement, schools, DSHS, Juvenile Court, and others, to facilitate continuity of care across systems.
  • Collaborates with managers and staff to implement and adhere to quality improvement and utilization management standards to support systemwide compliance and service quality.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Education and Experience: 

  • Master’s Degree in Psychiatric/Mental Health nursing with prescribing authority in Washington State.
  • Two years of clinical experience providing assessment, diagnosis, and treatment services in a medical, behavioral health, or community health setting.
  • Experience supervising or overseeing support staff in a healthcare or behavioral health environment.

Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the necessary qualifications to successfully perform the duties of the position will be considered.

Preferred Education and Experience:  

  • Two years of related experience as an ARNP working in community mental health, substance use disorder treatment, corrections, or other public-sector medical settings.
  • Two years of experience prescribing psychotropic medications.
  • Experience providing psychiatric care across a broad range of mental health conditions.
  • Experience working with detailed clinical documentation, medication protocols, or treatment plans requiring strong accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Experience working within County or agency-based healthcare, behavioral health, or public-sector systems.
  • Experience treating individuals with substance use disorders or working in integrated behavioral health settings.

Professional Licenses/Certifications: 

  • Registered Nurse in the State of Washington.
  • Licensed ARNP with additional training in psychiatric mental health nursing and with prescriptive authority in the State of Washington.
  • National Certification by American Nursing Credentialing Center as a clinical specialist in mental health nursing; as clinical nurse specialist, or psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner.
  • Basic First Aid and CPR.

Other Requirements: 

  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License with proof of automobile insurance and acceptable driving record.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is primarily performed in an outpatient clinical or office setting, with occasional assignments in other agencies or community locations.
  • May encounter individuals experiencing emotional distress, acute psychiatric symptoms, or escalated behavior, requiring situational awareness and adherence to safety protocols.
  • May experience interruptions, moderate noise levels, and shared workspaces.
  • Duties may require driving to meetings or service locations in varying road and weather conditions.
  • May have incidental exposure to blood, body fluids, or other biohazardous materials while performing job duties.
  • May occasionally work outside standard business hours to support client needs or agency activities.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, reach, and move between workstations or clinical areas.
  • Frequently required to lift, carry, or move items up to 25 pounds (e.g., supplies, equipment, medical materials).
  • Must have sufficient vision, hearing, and manual dexterity to perform clinical and administrative tasks, including taking vital signs, using medical or office equipment, and documenting in electronic systems.
  • May occasionally assist with positioning or supporting individuals during routine clinical procedures.
  • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle to travel between work locations as needed.
