Authorization and Referral Coordinator – Patient Access

Location: Uvalde Memorial Hospital – Uvalde, Texas

Job Type: Full-Time

Make a Difference Every Day

At Uvalde Memorial Hospital, we’re committed to ensuring our patients receive the care they need — without delay. As an Authorization and Referral Coordinator, you’ll play a vital behind-the-scenes role in making that happen. By securing necessary insurance authorizations and coordinating referrals, you’ll help remove barriers to care, support our clinical teams, and create a smoother experience for patients during their healthcare journey.

In This Role, You Will:

  • Obtain prior authorizations for inpatient and outpatient services, procedures, and treatments to ensure timely care.

  • Review and verify insurance coverage, benefits, and requirements to prevent service delays.

  • Coordinate referrals from primary care providers to specialists and other healthcare services.

  • Track and follow up on the status of referrals and authorizations to ensure proper documentation and follow-through.

  • Maintain accurate records in the hospital's electronic medical records (EMR) system and prepare reports as needed.

  • Communicate with insurance companies, providers, and patients to clarify benefits, requirements, and next steps.

  • Provide support and education to staff and providers regarding authorization and referral procedures.

  • Ensure compliance with payer guidelines, HIPAA regulations, and hospital policies.

What We're Looking For:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in healthcare or business administration preferred.

  • At least 2–3 years of experience in a healthcare setting, with prior experience in billing, referrals, or insurance verification strongly preferred.

  • Proficiency in EMR systems and Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple deadlines.

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.

  • Knowledge of insurance plans, payer requirements, and HIPAA compliance.

  • Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced setting.

Why You’ll Love Working Here:

  • You'll help ensure patients get timely access to care while supporting clinical and financial operations.

  • Be part of a mission-driven team focused on service and integrity.

  • Enjoy growth opportunities in a dynamic healthcare environment.

  • We celebrate milestones, big and small — especially yours!
