The Production Supervisor (“Supervisor”) coordinates in conjunction with the Production Manager the day-to-day production and planning activities of his/her assigned jobs and tasks in the assigned area.     

The primary responsibilities are outlined as follows:

   

a. Production Supervision

b. Personnel Supervision

c. Control of planned production hours per job 

d. Planning and optimizing production processes

e. Continuous Improvement

f. Quality / Safety

  

Primary Duties: 

· Manufacturing

o Management of production floor for assigned tasks/jobs/duties. 

o Participate in review of new jobs and their production process including routing planning with Production Manager prior to job start.

o Support planning of production locations for different work orders.

o Create daily employee assignment sheets as needed and report deviations daily to Production Manager. 

o Supervise employees assure that work assignments are achieved to keep delivery date and planned hours.

o Support Logistics in kit planning and material flow during the production process, and report shortages, material losses and other issues as defined in procedures.

o Support, plan and schedule subcontract services. 

o Verify that jobs are planned properly and that all materials, tools, supplies, equipment including safety supplies and equipment are ready and/or included in the kit before production start.

o Brief employees on work orders and their requirements prior start of production.

o Ensure that assigned team members understand, are sufficiently trained and can perform each task and process correctly, safely and efficiently.

o Ensure that necessary production markings (i.e. the next work center) or process steps are marked on parts; ensure the proper labeling / identification of parts.

o Monitor and report daily job hours and assure the manufacture of parts according to customer specifications within the planned time.

o Ensure that employees record their time in the correct work center / work order within data collection. 

o Communicate with team to keep team motivated, on-target and holding quality, specs, timeline, etc. 

o Update Production Manager daily on job progress (including delays or issues; production status / actual to planned HRS, personnel, etc.) und update daily assignment sheets as requested.

o Coordinate and assure resolution of technical questions on a job through involvement of SMI employees and Production Manager or as appropriate and required. 

o Suggest innovation and continual improvement ideas to Production Manager and oversee assigned projects.

o If required perform work as fitter – welder / assembler / processor - as needed. 

· Personnel

o Discuss training suggestions for employees with Production Manager and HR.

o Improve manpower utilization within existing departments and processes.

o Report positive and negative performance observations to Production Manager.

o Support personnel evaluations as requested by Production Manager.

o Report employee absenteeism, early leave and other irregularities to HR and Production Manager.

o Support planning of planned employee absences to not interrupt the production plan.

o Report all personnel conflicts or insubordination between one or more employees to the Production Manager and HR.

o Encourage team work and focus on fact-based problem solving.

o Ensure that employee issues are addressed in a timely fashion.

o Assist with personnel interviews as needed. 

o Provide observations and disciplinary suggestions to Production Manager and HR.

· Equipment / Facilities

o Ensure production equipment is maintained, operable and operated correctly.

o Apply and enforce clean shop floor practices (5S and applicable regulations).

o Ensure that operators execute defined daily maintenance checks and other tasks as defined.

· Reports

o Report daily non-conformances (NCR’s), rework reasons and similar activities.

o Report daily machine downtime and reason to Production Manager. 

o Report inconsistencies with respect to shop numbers, part numbers, revision numbers and similar to Production Manager.

o Report daily missing skills or lapses in skills or ability to Production Manager and/or as needed.

· Support Processes

o Implement manufacturing strategies and action plans to ensure that the facility supports strategic initiatives.

o Update Sales and Production Manager on any delivery changes or technical problems.

o Support implementation of new production technologies.

· Safety Team

o Serve as a member of the Safety Team.

o Assure that all personnel in the shop are adhering to safe practices and safety policy.

ISO/Quality:

· Adhere to applicable procedures as defined in the SMI Quality System.

· Assure department personnel are trained and adhere to procedures of the SMI Quality System.

· Maintain and improve the department’s quality procedures.

· Support and recommend Continual Improvement projects and activities.

Requirements

Required knowledge, education & skills: 

  • Basic knowledge of supervisory practices, principles, techniques
  • Knowledge of operating principles and techniques of production/manufacturing processes
  • Ability to read and interpret documents and blueprints for content and accuracy
  • Ability to communicate professionally with personnel inside and outside the organization 
  • Outstanding decision-making ability
  • Good organizational and planning skills
  • Ability to perform basic computer applications required for position
  • Ability to use the equipment & tools used to perform a job
  • Ability to lead and work as a team and follow and effectively relay instructions
  • Mathematical skills sufficient to perform duties
