Global Merchant & Network Services (GMNS) brings together American Express' merchant-and network related businesses to enable a sharp focus on using the power of our network to provide unique value to all our mutual customers. The organization manages the relationships with the millions of merchants around the world that accepts American Express and runs the company’s payment network and manages bank partnerships globally.
This role sits within International Risk & Controls and is dedicated to supporting the Merchant business in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ), focused on ensuring control management is embedded in the day-to-day operations of our global merchant business.
The objective of the role is to provide specialized and strategic operational risk advisory to the business on product and service areas to ensure an effective control environment exists that delivers on all operational risk obligations supporting the Legal Entity. The role will involve extensive collaboration with multiple partners across numerous business units, functional areas, and geographies.
Responsibilities
- Act as a trusted First Line of Defence (1LOD) operational risk partner, building strong relationships to enhance control environment maturity and risk governance
- Serve as the subject matter expert on risks specific to the ANZ merchant business
- Ensure risks and issues are effectively identified, assessed, prioritised, and managed in line with regulatory requirements, business objectives, and Legal Entity obligations
- Manage and support governance forums for Merchant Services, ensuring alignment with enterprise-wide governance (e.g., Operational Risk Management Committee) and sharing insights and lessons learned
- Facilitate execution of enterprise operational risk programs, policies, and frameworks (e.g., conduct risk, issue management)
- Compile and review topical risk information, including emerging trends, best practices, and regulatory updates relevant to each area of expertise, and support the day-to-day activities required to maintain the repository of topical risk information
- Support the business for consultation on all operational risk programs to enable BU to strengthen and embed relevant ORM considerations into processes
- Be a key leader for sharing insights, better practices, themes, etc. through engagement with the central program teams and other Legal Entity governance teams to support the operational risk programs and streamline processes
- Manage risk governance and reporting activities across the Legal Entities, including preparation of materials for risk and compliance committees, governance forums, and senior management, with a strong focus on transparency, risk insights, and emerging themes
Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in operational risk management, internal audit, or related risk/control functions
- Strong understanding of operational risk lifecycle activities, including risk identification, assessment, mitigation, monitoring, and reporting
- Strong project management, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders and obtain buy-in from senior business and technology partners
- Experience in process governance and control frameworks aligned to regulatory and policy requirements
- Analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret data, identify trends, and assess risk scenarios
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Business, Risk Mgmt., or related field; advanced degrees (e.g., MBA, MSc) or certifications are advantageous
- Experience within financial services industry, particularly in merchant acquiring, payments, or network businesses
- Experience in at least one of the following:
- Supporting go-to subject matter experts in sharing subject matter expertise within the BU on specialized risks
- Facilitating activities to comply with enterprise policies and programs pertaining to specific risk types
- Support advising on specialized risk types and integration into broader operational risk policies and programs
