Job Description

We are seeking a compassionate Companion with experience supporting individuals with dementia, either professionally or as a family caregiver. The ideal candidate will provide meaningful intellectual stimulation, engagement, and companionship for a social, active 70-year-old woman who loves the performing arts.

Schedule:

  • Minimum 3 days per week

  • 8:30 AM – 2:30 PM availability

  • Shifts will typically be 4 hours

  • Some flexibility is preferred

Preferred Qualifications & Interests:

  • Experience with dementia care strongly preferred

  • Background or interest in musical theater, performing arts, visual arts, or education is a plus

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to engage clients in meaningful activities

Requirements:

  • Must have a valid driver’s license

  • Must have access to a reliable vehicle

Location: Westerleigh area, Northern Staten Island

Pay Rate: $30/hour

Responsibilities:

  • Providing companionship to older adults and people with chronic health conditions in their homes (e.g., discussing current events, creating artwork, reviewing photo albums).

  • Providing compassionate, patient hands-on personal care support for ADLs, including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and transfers.

  • Planning activities outside the home and accompanying clients to keep them engaged with the world and their favorite pastimes (e.g., trips to museums, concerts, plays, or the park).

  • Escorting clients to doctors’ appointments.

  • Running errands for clients (e.g., grocery shopping, sundries).

  • Reminding clients to take their medications.

  • Doing light exercise with clients (e.g., helping with stretching routine or prescribed physical therapy).

  • Assisting clients in preparing meals.

  • Performing light housekeeping, such as dusting, tidying, and laundry.

Qualifications:

We welcome candidates with diverse backgrounds including the creative arts and healthcare fields. Our employment is selective.

Strong candidates possess:

  • A passion for caring for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Prior experience working with this population is valued, but not required.

  • An accredited high school diploma, though we prefer candidates with college and advanced degrees.

  • Deep empathy and patience.

  • Flexibility, reliability, and responsiveness.

  • Creativity and a positive, open-hearted approach.

  • Strong composure under pressure.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to build trust-based relationships with clients and their families.
