Position Summary:

Reporting to the Supervisor, Financial Counseling Shared Services, this position effectively captures patient liabilities while providing financial counseling to patients/guarantors, who require assistance in seeking and applying for healthcare funding (e.g., Charity Care, or other local/governmental assistance programs) and/or require assistance in reviewing and establishing payment options prior-to-service, at time-of-service, and/or post-service. Determines the financial status of the patient during the financial counseling process and coordinates benefit authorization and management. Ensures compliance and exceptional customer service when working with patients/guarantors.

 

Contributes to the success of a high-performing shared services organization by helping to drive the long-term Johns Hopkins Medicine Shared Services vision. Helps foster an environment in which continuous improvement in business processes and services is welcomed and recognized.

 

 

 

Education:

Requires High School Diploma or equivalent.

 

 

 

Location: Bayview Medical Center 4940 Eastern Ave Baltimore, MD 100% onsite role- Monday-Friday, flexible day hours

 

 

Licensure/Certifications:

Certified Application Counselor (CAC) certification within 6 – 12 months 

 

 

Work Experience:

Minimum of two years’ experience in hospital or clinic environment, an insurance company, managed care organization or other financial service setting, performing financial counseling, financial clearance and/or customer service activities.

Completion of regulatory/mandatory certifications and skills validation competencies preferred

 

 

 

Skills:

  • Knowledge of insurance and governmental programs, regulations, and application processes (e.g., Medicaid, etc.), managed care contracts and coordination of benefits is required
  • Knowledge of medical and insurance terminology as well as an understanding of healthcare insurance is required
  • General knowledge of patient access financial counseling functions in acute and non-acute settings preferred
  • Working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations desired
  • Basic computer knowledge
  • Basic math skills
  • Requires ability to understand, interpret, evaluate, and resolve complex issues
  • Intermediate in Microsoft Office
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to manage frequent in-person and/or phone patient contacts while effectively maintaining and documenting data in the patient record
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and active listening skills. Bilingual preferred.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary in dealing with internal and external customers; must develop positive relationships with clinical staff to maximize the benefit and effectiveness of the financial counseling function
  • Accuracy and attentiveness to detail required
  • Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, vision, goals, and values of Johns Hopkins Medicine

Salary Range: Minimum 20.52/hour - Maximum 33.88/hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility. In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount, salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls, before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
