About the Department
This is responsible typing and administrative work involving the transcription and processing of police reports from digital dictation. The work is performed in a law enforcement environment and involves both transcribing and proofreading, approving and merging field reports to ensure proper coding of incidents as determined by the FBI. The work also includes responding to in-person and telephone inquiries from both internal and external customers, providing or obtaining information, making appropriate referrals, and receiving and relaying messages for commissioned personnel. Supervision received is direct during training period, but becomes general when procedures have been learned. Assignments are performed within established department procedures..
This progression series is intended to provide automatic movement from the Police Report Typist 1 to a Police Report Typist 2 after 30 months, during which time the employee is expected to take on the full range of duties and responsibilities under general supervision.
CURRENT VACANCIES: There are currently two (2) Full-Time vacancies working a rotating shift. Shifts could be early morning or overnight and include weekends with rotating days off.

Position Duties
Type original and supplemental reports from direct dictation. rough drafts, dictation equipment, recorded interviews and phone conversations, or various source documents. Review typed material for accuracy and completeness.
Review field reports for mandatory Incident Based Reporting data requirements, make corrections or return to officer for review and correction. Approve and merge field reports to the Department's RMS (Records Management System). Proof and correct grammar and/or spelling errors and distribute as needed.
Process a variety of data/documents and route information to appropriate location and/or person. Sort and distribute incoming and outgoing mail.
Respond to telephone inquiries from both internal and external customers and make appropriate referrals. Respond to inquiries from the public at our customer service windows. Receive and relay messages for commissioned personnel. Assist department personnel in finding reports, copier problems and other miscellaneous requests.
Perform related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications

Other Qualifications
Ability to type at a net speed of 50 words per minute. A keyboarding assessment will be administered to verify the selected candidate meets this requirement.
Physical Requirements:
Employees will be expected to spend a majority of time operating a desktop computer and telephone. Employees will type for long periods of time and under varied and occasionally stressful situations. Employees may also have significant public contact and are expected to provide excellent customer service.
