The BESS Asset Manager provides managerial leadership over a portfolio of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) assets across multiple commercial markets. This role is responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, financially optimized, and contractually compliant performance of all BESS facilities under management.

This position supports a team of external and internal technical and commercial subject matter experts, fostering a collaborative and solutions-oriented environment. The BESS Asset Manager ensures proper execution of business plans, oversees project performance, maintains strong governance of third-party O&M providers, and represents ownership interests in internal and external forums. The role focuses on BESS technology and project lifecycle management, including operational oversight, warranty management, degradation tracking, commercial strategy, regulatory compliance, and risk mitigation strategies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Coordination & Influence

  • Serve as the primary point of coordination for assigned assets, working across engineering, performance, O&M, finance, and compliance functions to meet operational and commercial objectives.
  • Influence and partner with internal subject-matter experts, vendors, and external stakeholders to resolve issues and deliver outcomes without direct supervisory authority.
  • Facilitate effective cross-functional communication, ensuring clarity of roles, expectations, and deliverables.

Operational Performance of BESS Assets

  • Manage and monitor the day-to-day operational performance of assigned BESS facilities to achieve availability, reliability, and KPI targets.
  • Coordinate with third-party O&M, EMS, and service providers to resolve equipment, controls, cybersecurity, and communications issues.
  • Review and analyze operational data, including state-of-charge profiles, degradation trends, cycling behavior, and EMS dispatch logic.
  • Ensure execution of preventive, corrective, and predictive maintenance strategies in alignment with manufacturer requirements and warranty obligations.

Financial, Commercial & Contractual Management

  • Administer all project agreements, including O&M contracts, warranty terms, service contracts, interconnection agreements, and revenue-generating dispatch rules.
  • Optimize financial performance through operational efficiencies, cost controls, dispatch optimization, and strategic risk mitigation.
  • Lead annual budgeting processes, variance explanations, and long-term operational planning for BESS assets.
  • Manage tax equity, debt compliance, and investor-level reporting requirements specific to BESS projects.

Compliance, Risk & Regulatory Oversight

  • Maintain current knowledge of standards and regulatory frameworks impacting BESS operations
  • Coordinate safety reviews, fire protection strategy assessments, and emergency response plans specific to energy storage facilities.
  • Ensure accurate and timely environmental, financial, and regulatory reporting as required.

Performance Monitoring & Reporting

  • Monitor and analyze key performance indicators (availability, degradation, efficiency, round-trip losses, dispatch accuracy, revenue capture).
  • Provide comprehensive reporting to owners, partners, and internal stakeholders on asset health, risks, commercial performance, and forecasts.
  • Lead internal review discussions regarding performance, outlook, strategy, and future opportunities.

Strategic Management & Decision-Making

  • Provide informed input on operational strategies, market participation, hedging support, and optimization initiatives.
  • Evaluate the technical and financial impacts of system upgrades, augmentation strategies, EMS tuning, and warranty-related actions.
  • Identify and communicate key risks, including battery aging, thermal events, warranty exposure, and contractual considerations, and propose mitigation strategies that enhance asset value and longevity.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Finance, Business, or related discipline required.
  • Minimum 2 years of direct asset management experience, preferably with Battery Energy Storage Systems. CAISO experience a plus.
  • Strong understanding of BESS architecture, EMS platforms, warranty structures, fire safety standards, and degradation modeling.
  • Experience with tax equity, debt structures, and investor reporting (preferred).
  • Skilled in contract administration, budgeting, economic modeling, and commercial negotiations.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and analyze complex technical and financial data.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, especially when interacting with senior management, investors, and external partners.
  • Proven leadership capability with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • Strong problem-solving, critical reasoning, and decision-making skills.
