Position Summary
The Project Engineer provides critical support to the Project Manager on heavy civil construction projects valued from $100K to $20M+. This role assists with project administration, documentation, cost tracking, and field coordination while gaining experience in all aspects of construction project management. The Project Engineer serves as a liaison between the office and field, supporting ESI's self-performing disciplines: asphalt paving, concrete operations, earthwork & grading, utilities installation, and traffic control operations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist Project Manager with project setup, documentation, and administrative tasks
- Track project costs, review invoices, and maintain accurate job cost records
- Process submittals, RFIs, and change orders through project management systems
- Maintain organized project files and documentation for compliance and audit readiness
- Coordinate with Project Superintendents and field personnel on daily operations
- Monitor material deliveries, quantities, and track daily production reports
- Assist with preparation of payment applications and monthly billing
- Create and maintain project schedules and track progress
- Support procurement activities (quotes, purchase orders, subcontracts)
- Conduct site visits to monitor progress and document field conditions
- Prepare meeting minutes, daily reports, and project correspondence
- Review plans and specifications to identify potential issues or conflicts
- Assist with quantity takeoffs and change order preparation
- Track contract requirements, milestones, and deadlines
- Support Project Manager with owner communications and meetings
- Learn and manage smaller projects independently as experience grows
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 0–3 years of experience in construction project management or engineering
- Basic understanding of construction processes, plans, and specifications
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Project)
- Familiarity with construction software (HCSS HeavyJob, Trimble Viewpoint Vista, Procore, or similar) preferred
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work in both office and field environments
- Self-motivated with ability to learn quickly and take initiative

- Valid driver’s license

• Ability to wear PPE and work in varying indoor/outdoor environments
• Strong attention to detail, communication, and ability to work under pressure
Physical Demands
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crawling, and material handling
• Lift 10–50 lbs. frequently; up to 100 lbs. occasionally
• Occasional climbing and overhead reaching
• Continuous physical activity throughout workday
• PPE required at all times on job sites
