About the Department
The hiring rate for this position is $17.89/hr.
Under the direct supervision of the Streets/Stormwater Maintenance Foreman, or designee. Performs un-skilled and semi-skilled manual labor related to the City's streets and stormwater systems in the Streets/Stormwater Division of the Public Works Department. Assignments include construction, maintenance, and/or truck and equipment operations, in accordance with all applicable City codes and Departmental policies. Requires the ability to be contacted by telephone for call-out after hours. Work is reviewed through observations and obtained results.
Position Duties
- Performs patching and repairing to streets, sidewalks, curbs, and right-of-ways with asphalt, brick, or other appropriate roadway material; sets concrete forms, pours and finishes concrete.
- Operates machinery and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of streets, sidewalks, curbs, and right-of-ways.
- Fabricates and installs street signs.
- Clears debris and vegetation from drainage ditches, creeks, and retention ponds.
- Cleans, repairs, and sets drainage pipes for storm drains and catch basins.
- Mows, trims, and edges the City’s right-of-ways; prunes trees and bushes; and removes brush material.
- Sets up and picks up barricades, cones, and warning signs.
- Uses a wide variety of hand and power tools such as shovels, picks, power saws, mowers, edgers and trimmers.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:
- Knowledge of the tools used in Public Works maintenance and construction, and knowledge of materials, methods, and practices used in Public Works construction environment.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards connected with maintenance and/or Public Works construction work.
- Ability to learn methods of maintaining buildings, roads and bridges, and pipe works.
- Ability to physically perform light to heavy manual labor in all weather conditions.
- Ability to understand, communicate, and follow both oral and written instructions.
- Skill in the safe operation of hand and power tools and light to heavy equipment specific to tasks assigned.
Graduation from high school; or GED. Florida Stormwater Association (FSA) Level 1 Certification, or the ability to obtain within eighteen (18) months from date of hire. Valid Florida Driver’s License.
Other Qualifications
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction).
- Acceptable hearing (with or without hearing aid).
- Reaching, bending, lifting, use of fingers, and hands, sitting, standing, walking, and climbing are frequent activities.
Works outside under various weather conditions. Work may be required overnight or as emergencies dictate.
