Job Description

Overview:

The Athletic Trainer is responsible for the prevention, recognition, evaluation, and treatment of athletic injuries for student-athletes. This role supports the overall health, safety, and performance of athletes while working collaboratively with coaches, physicians,administration and the Sports Medicine Team. The Athletic Trainer ensures appropriate medical care during practices and events and maintains compliance with all district, state, and professional standards.


Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary responder for athletic injuries during practices and competitions.
  • Provide first aid, injury evaluation, and immediate care, including activation of Emergency Action Plans (EAP) when necessary.
  • Determine need for emergency medical care and coordinate appropriate response.
  • Provide taping, bracing, and preventative care to student-athletes.
  • Develop and support injury prevention and conditioning programs as requested.
  • Coordinate rehabilitation programs in consultation with physicians and follow established protocols from the Head Team Physician.
  • Refer injured athletes to physicians and communicate with medical providers as needed.
  • Maintain and manage the athletic training room, including equipment and supplies.
  • Prepare for medical coverage needs before and after practices and events.
  • Ensure adherence to Universal Precautions and district medical protocols.
  • Utilize required systems (e.g., Final Forms) for documentation and communication.
  • Support and verify coaching certifications as required.
  • Provide guidance on nutrition and wellness for athletes.
  • Maintain compliance with collaboration agreements with MD or DO as required. Follow all Standing Orders and treatment guidelines for Findlay athletic programs.

Recordkeeping & Compliance:

  • Maintain accurate and confidential medical records for a minimum of seven (7) years, including:
    • Physical examination documentation
    • Emergency medical release forms
    • Injury evaluations and treatment records
    • Physician communications
  • Ensure all documentation meets legal, medical, and district requirements.

Medication & Medical Protocols:

  • Will not dispense oral medications except for prescribed and athlete-carried items such as:
    epinephrine, insulin, inhalers, and contact-related solutions.
  • Ensure all medical care aligns with prescribed treatment plans and district policy.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Must hold a current license in accordance with §4755.62 of the Ohio Revised Code.
  • CPR certification required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting the athletic programs of Findlay City Schools.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to perform effectively in high-pressure and emergency situations.
  • Strong collaboration skills with athletes, coaches, medical professionals, and staff.
  • Excellent organizational, leadership, and communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Ability to maintain accurate and confidential medical records.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound professional judgment.
  • Must meet requirements outlined in the contract between the School District and contracting agency.

Preferred

  • Previous experience as an Athletic Trainer in a high school or collegiate setting.
  • Master’s degree in Athletic Training or related field.
  • Certification through the Board of Certification (BOC).
  • Experience working within a school-based athletic program.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical record systems such as Final Forms.
  • Experience collaborating with physicians, physical therapists, and sports medicine teams.
  • Knowledge of current best practices in injury prevention, rehabilitation, and sports performance.


Physical Demands

  • Ability to stand, walk, and move quickly for extended periods during practices and events.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and position athletic equipment and assist injured athletes when necessary.
  • Ability to respond rapidly in emergency situations.

Working Conditions

  • Frequent evening, weekend, and holiday work required.
  • Work performed in indoor and outdoor athletic environments in varying weather conditions.
  • High-paced environment with exposure to physically demanding and potentially stressful situations.
