Job Description

The Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART), the largest public transit agency in Iowa, is hiring a Maintenance Vehicle Technician to diagnose, adjust, and repair DART vehicles.

 

Pay:

Pay is based on ASE certification level and increases as certifications are obtained:

  • Technician I: $28.63/hour
  • Technician II: $29.82/hour
  • Technician III: $31.02/hour
  • Technician IV: $32.18/hour
  • Journey Level: $34.06/hour
  • Master Technician: $36.57/hour

Hours and work location will be determined based on the available bid. 

Position Summary:

Under direct supervision, this position installs maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs communications and electronic equipment used on buses and other vehicles as well as repairs, maintains and troubleshoots electric, hybrid, gasoline and/or diesel-powered equipment within a diversified fleet. 

 

Essential Functions of this Position:

  • Diagnose, adjust, repair, or overhaul vehicle systems to ensure DART vehicles are ready for safe and reliable operation
  • Diagnoses malfunctions and performs vehicle repairs (e.g. adjust/test steering, electrical, cooling, lubricating, braking systems, drive trains, suspensions, power steering units, clutches, transmissions and oil, temperature, gas regulating components, adjust/test/rebuild engines etc.) and related assigned duties within qualification level, in accordance with all relevant Federal, State/Provincial and local guidelines and requirements. Test-drives vehicles to ensure repair resolved the problem; arranges for and obtains appropriate inspections and approval of all major repairs before vehicle is released from maintenance facility
  • Perform routine scheduled vehicle maintenance including lubrication, inspection for wear, and adjustments
  • Identifies and reports any additional maintenance and/or repairs found necessary in conducting assigned repairs and maintenance including repairs and maintenance required to be performed by Technicians with a higher qualification level
  • Performs field and bench service maintenance on buses including, but not limited to, two-way radio, destination sign, public address, Fuel focus, AVL, AVI, APC, Wi-Fi, Fare boxes, cameras, and silent alarm system on buses
  • Responsible for bench repairs on circuit boards on the component level of electronic communication equipment (including, but not limited to, mobile radios, cameras, control heads, handsets, destination sign modules, power supplies, encoder boxes, microphones and amplifiers) as well as electronic fare collection equipment (including but not limited to bill modules, coin modules, power supplies, processor boards, keyboards, and related electromechanical modules)
  • Installs, tests, repairs and removes electronic communication and other electronic equipment as needed; 1) Programs and operates automatic test equipment to aid in the troubleshooting of electronic equipment; 2) Removes electronic equipment from vehicles taken out of service; 3) Performs preventive and remedial maintenance 4) Operate computer diagnostic equipment to determine problems with vehicle systems

 

Additional Functions of this Position:

  • Maintains a safe, clean, productive and efficient work area including ensuring work area is in compliance with all relevant guidelines and requirements
  • Records time spent, parts used and repairs and/or maintenance conducted on appropriate form(s)
  • Performs road calls and utilizes company equipment to assist in the diagnosis of vehicle malfunctions

 

Education and/or Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent education required; Two year degree in electrical and/or diesel mechanics or a related field preferred
  • ASE Certification is preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years of mechanic repair experience(transit bus experience) preferred
  • Must obtain Transit Bus ASE Certifications within 6 months of employment
  • Ability to obtain a valid Iowa CDL with Air Brake and Passenger endorsements

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Mechanical knowledge of vehicles and vehicle systems, including their maintenance, repair and proper function.
  • Knowledge of hand and power tools typically used in vehicle repair.
  • Ability to select and use hand tools and power tools to repair vehicles.
  • Ability to identify and troubleshoot problems with vehicle operation.
  • Knowledge of electronic and camera systems

 

Skills and Abilities to:

  • Safely operate hydraulic jacks and/or hoists to raise and lower buses, heavy parts, or equipment
  • Perform all duties while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Remain up to date on transit-related software used on fleet vehicles.
  • Maintain strong attention to detail under stressful conditions.
  • Obtain/maintain an Iowa Class B CDL with passenger and air brake endorsements, as well as insurability to operate a company vehicle.
  • Maintain ASE certification as required by the level of certification obtained.

Special Requirements:

  • Must be flexible and able to work off-hours shifts as required.
  • Must possess adequate tools to complete the work assigned.

 

Physical Demands:

On a normal workday, this position requires:

  • Requires prolonged standing walking, reaching, bending stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting and carrying heavy objects.
  • Extensive use of hands, fingers, legs an arms in grasping objects, driving equipment and using hand and power tools involved in maintenance and repair functions.   
  • Requires the capacity to exert up to 75 pounds either pushing, pulling or lifting


Work Environment:

  • Exposed to outside weather conditions including extreme hot and cold, humidity and dampness, and noise and vibration.
  • Exposed to various mechanical, atmospheric, and chemical hazards.
  • This position is a safety sensitive position and is subject to the FTA Drug and Alcohol Program including pre-employment, random, post-accident, and reasonable suspicion tests.
