ANNOUNCEMENT OF POSITION VACANCY

 

 

SUMMARY: The Academic Engagement & Success Department within the Office of Student Success is looking for talented and motivated students to serve as Peer Mentors to provide support for the I Am First, Bronco Navigators and Bronco Scholars Program, including during summer transition programs and throughout the academic year. The primary responsibilities of the Peer Mentor (PM) include creating community and a sense of belonging for program participants by providing peer support and guidance during their first year and delivering critical programmatic support for each program area

 

SOME OF THE THINGS THAT YOU WILL GET TO DO (this is just a small sampling of work variety):

 

II. Peer Mentorship/Academic Coaching: 

  • Provide mentorship and guidance to program participants from summer throughout their first year at CPP.
  • Provide 1:1 and group mentorship to help students improve academic skills such as time management, note taking, and effective study techniques.
  • PMs provide holistic peer mentorship, foster a sense of belonging, and connect students with appropriate campus resources to promote academic success and course completion.
  • Log formal mentee interactions in CPP Connect platform as requested and by the deadline(s) assigned
  • Demonstrate how to navigate and utilize CPP Online Resources (e.g., Canvas, CPP Connect, myCPP, etc.)
  • Guide and refer mentees to campus and college resources (e.g., 24hr computer lab, websites, etc.)
  • Refer students to campus departments to resolve issues (e.g., BAC, BLC, Registrar’s Office, etc.)
  • Provide year-round mentorship for mentees who participate in the summer transition program
  • Meet with mentees 1:1 and as a group throughout the year
  • Model and cultivate strong academic habits with mentees 

 

II. Community Building:

  • Actively work toward creating an inclusive community where all students feel safe to be themselves
  • Proactively address, mediate, and resolve conflicts between program participants as they arise
  • Promote participant discussions on matters of policy, respect, noise, and general welfare
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with program participants, faculty, and staff
  • Maintain privacy, as appropriate, when assisting mentees or other program participants
  • Report regularly, informally and in writing to program staff any community concerns
  • Maintain knowledge about university and departmental programs and resources
  • Participate in all Bronco Scholars summer program and academic year events
  • Assist participants with personal, academic, or professional concerns.
  • Be sensitive and responsive to participant needs 

 

III. Programming: 

  • Assist with summer transition programs which includes but is not limited to; mandatory attendance, staying in the dorms with the students for the duration of the program (possibly 6 nights, 7 days); organize and facilitate evening events, gather and guide students to different program activities (e.g. check-in, meals, workshops etc.)
  • Assist program staff with social media management (e.g. creating content, posting, sharing etc.)
  • Support Pro Staff with program and event planning during summer and academic year.
  • Participate in resource tabling events on or off campus for program recruitment or promotion.
  • Participate in panels, presentations, visits etc., for program promotion or recruitment
  • Assist program staff with marketing, setup, facilitation, and takedown of program events
  • Encourage student participation in programs, events, and services on or off campus

 

IV. Administration:

  • Utilize Microsoft Outlook (Email, Calendar, Shifts, etc.) to manage schedule, timesheets, and communication.
  • Maintain regular communication and respond promptly via phone, email to program staff and students.
  • Document mentee attendance and engagement during summer program and academic year events.
  • Conduct call campaigns to recruit, retain and engage program participants.
  • Complete projects in a timely manner as directed (e.g., social media postings, event planning, etc.)
  • Utilize a variety of online platforms to complete projects (e.g., Canva, Hootsuite, Mailchimp, etc.)
  • Arrive promptly to and actively participate in staff meetings and events with professional attire.
  • Adhere to scheduled shift hours and support with program recruitment and planning.
  • Log and respond to program inquiries as directed (e.g., log/return phone calls, etc.).
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient online and physical workspace.
  • Report on mentee engagement with mentor.

Ø  Monday, June 22-26.

Ø  Support with program move-out: (TBD).

Ø  Participate in daily check-ins with professional staff.

Ø  Work a minimum 4-hour shift in the office to prep or support with programming.

Ø  Support with CPP First-Gen Week Nov 2-6.

Ø  Attend all program workshops, socials, and event activities.

 

·         Spring 2027

Ø  Work a minimum 4-hour shift in the office to prep or support with programming.

Ø  Attend professional development opportunities and other program socials.

Ø  Attend monthly staff meetings.

Ø  Participate in weekly peer mentor training and staff meetings.

Ø  Attend all program workshops, socials, and event activities.

 

V. Perform and participate in other duties as assigned by the department.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prioritize PM duties over other non-academic commitments.
  • Outside employment, clubs, fraternity/sorority and other extra-curricular commitments may not exceed 20 hours/week.
  • Must be enrolled in at least 6 units (undergraduate) throughout appointment (except summer term).
  • Must remain in good judicial standing (cannot be on disciplinary probation) throughout appointment.
  • Must live on campus in residence halls during BSP summer transition program.
  • Must attend all training and staff meetings throughout the year.
  • Must maintain a 2.0 Cumulative and CPP GPA throughout appointment.
  • Must be a currently enrolled student at Cal Poly Pomona.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Community building and programming experience.
  • Currently in their 2nd year or beyond at CPP.
  • Experience as a former summer transition program participant.
  • Experience working with students in a residential setting.
  • Prior experience in leadership or mentoring roles.
  • Affinity towards supporting first-year students.
