JOB DESCRIPTION


 


 


JOB TITLE: Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)


 


Job Purpose Statement/s: Under the professional direction of a credentialed school nurse, the job of "Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)” is done for the purpose/s of providing specialized physical health care procedures for severely disabled and medically fragile students, assisting credentialed school nurses in managing physical health conditions of students, maintaining student health information as required by Federal/State/Local agencies; and performing other related duties as assigned.  


 


Essential Job Functions:


 


* Administers first aid, medication and specialized treatment under direction for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and injured children.


-Administers insulin or assists in the administration of insulin to diabetic students, including assisting with carbohydrate counting and the calculation of proper insulin dosages.


-Appropriate administration of rectal diastat.


-Assists in the administration of medication to students as prescribed.


 


* Compiles data for reports (e.g. mandated monthly status reports, logs, etc.) for the purpose of assisting the credentialed school nurse in preparation of required documentation.


 


*Monitors blood glucose levels or supervises such monitoring for diabetic students.


 


* Performs specialized physical health care procedures, including but not limited to gastrostomy and nasogastric feedings, toileting, catheterizations, tracheotomy care, suction, osotomy care, diaper changes, nebulizer treatments, glucagon administration, emergency care in an anaphylactic reaction, including administration of the epi-pen, and lifting and  positioning physically disabled students and all other procedures complying with district policies. 


-Performs pediculosis screening of students and staff for the purpose of minimizing transmission and complying with district policies.


 


* Prepares documentation (e.g. school health card, medical emergency cards, inventory supplies, orders, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and conveying information.


 


* Refers students requiring further medical attention for the purpose of providing additional information to the credentialed school nurse.


 


* Reports incidents of communicable diseases to appropriate parties for the purpose of limiting disease transmission.


 


Other Job Functions:


* Cleans work areas (e.g. sinks, counters, buckets, cots, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary environment.


 


* Participates in Individual Educational Plan (IEP) meetings as appropriate.


-Participates in various activities (e.g. meetings, training, etc.) for the purpose of receiving and/or conveying information.


 


 


 


 


 


Job Requirements - Qualifications:


 


* Experience Required: Prior job related experience


 


* Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:


Skills to operate standard office equipment, use English in both written and verbal form, use correct spelling, grammar and punctuation, perform basic arithmetic calculations; communicate effectively, establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents and district staff.


Knowledge of nursing practices, basic anatomy, symptoms indicating change in patient condition, care of the chronically ill and/or medically fragile patients; first aid and CPR procedures; emergency equipment, supplies, medical appliances and equipment and terminology related to student health programs; health and medical record keeping practices, State and Federal health and safety regulations including procedures related to blood borne pathogens; modern office practices.


Abilities to work independently, understand and address students with special needs, understand and carry out oral and written instruction, make common sense decisions in routine and potentially critical situations. Significant physical abilities include reaching/handling/fingering, lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling, stooping/kneeling/crouching, talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity/depth perception.


 


* Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required:


A valid California Licensed Vocational Nurse license. Standard First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificates. Certification must be renewed at least every two years. Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance, Health Physical Clearance, Tuberculosis Testing/Clearance.


 


* Other Specialized Requirements:


A valid California Driver's License and access to reliable insured transportation to and between school sites during the school day.

PRIOR JOB RELATED EXPERIENCE PREFERRED.

Salary Info

Range 35 - The employee will be placed on the grade of the position they are applying for ESY at their current step. The rate will include longevity if it is applicable to the employee.

Comments and Other Information

Employment is contingent upon student enrollment.

ESY School Dates:
June 26th – All Staff Prep Day at assigned site (8:30 am – 1:30 pm)
June 29th - July 23rd (Monday - Thursday)

ALL JOB OFFERS ARE CONTINGENT ON STUDENT ENROLLMENT.

ESY Summer School

Staff Hours:
Roving: 8:15 am - 1:45 pm (5.5 hours)
From site to site to be determined daily

Student Hours:
Preschool: 8:30 am – 10:30 am (2 hours)
Elementary: 8:30 am – 1:30 pm (5 hours)
Secondary: 8:30 am – 1:30 pm (5 hours)
