Job Summary
The Staff Software Engineer is a highly experienced technical leader responsible for delivering complex projects, setting technical direction, and supporting the engineering team's growth at Neumo. This role designs and builds scalable, secure, and maintainable systems while acting as a trusted advisor and mentor to engineers across multiple teams. The Staff Engineer bridges technical execution and strategic initiatives, leading by example and partnering closely with Product, QA, and cross-functional groups to ensure excellence in engineering practices and product delivery.
Duties and Responsibilities
Technical Architecture & Solution Design
- Architect and design highly scalable, reliable, and secure software systems across multiple product lines.
- Define technical standards, ensure alignment to architectural patterns, and champion engineering best practices.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to influence long-term technical roadmaps and innovation strategies.
Software Development & Technical Delivery
- Lead end-to-end development of complex features, ensuring high performance and scalability.
- Perform hands-on coding, code reviews, debugging, and optimization on critical initiatives.
- Set standards for quality, testing, and documentation throughout the software development lifecycle (SDLC).
Cross-Team Leadership
- Drive cross-functional technical initiatives and lead large projects involving multiple engineering teams.
- Collaborate with Product Management, UX, QA, and Infrastructure teams to deliver customer-focused solutions.
- Act as a technical point of escalation for complex problems and architectural decisions across teams.
Mentorship & Team Development
- Mentor and coach Senior Engineers, Engineers II, and Engineers I to grow technical and leadership skills.
- Promote a learning culture by leading technical discussions, design reviews, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
- Support onboarding and growth plans for engineers entering senior and lead levels.
Innovation & Continuous Improvement
- Research emerging technologies and recommend adoption to improve performance, reliability, and productivity.
- Identify technical debt and champion strategies for remediation and modernization.
- Foster an environment encouraging innovation, experimentation, and engineering excellence.
- Contribute to organizational initiatives, technical steering committees, and strategic planning efforts as needed
Education and Experience
Required
- 8+ years of experience in software engineering with progressive technical leadership responsibilities.
- Proven success designing and building distributed systems or SaaS platforms at scale.
Preferred
- Prior technical leadership or Staff Engineer experience in a SaaS or high-growth technology company.
- Contributions to open-source projects or technical publications.
- Agile/Scrum development environment experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Expert-level proficiency in at least one core programming language (e.g., PHP, Java, C#, Python).
- Strong architectural and systems design skills.
- Deep understanding of design patterns, cloud-native architectures, security best practices, and performance optimization.
- Experience with microservices, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
- Familiarity with DevOps practices and modern SDLC tools (e.g., GitHub Actions, Terraform, monitoring frameworks).
- Demonstrated ability to influence technical decisions across teams and departments.
- Strong mentoring, coaching, and cross-functional leadership skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical topics to diverse audiences.
Work Environment:
- Office setting with a moderate noise level.
- The employee will work at an individual workstation, using a telephone and computer.
Physical Demands:
- Must be able to remain seated for extended periods.
- Regular use of a computer and other office machinery, such as printers and copy machines.
- Occasional movement around the office.
- Frequent communication via telephone.
