This is a 12-month, full-time position with an expected commitment of 40 hours per week.
Salary range: $100,000 - $120,000
If hired, you must reside in the Chicagoland area.
Primary purpose: Leads the design and implementation of an ICU-focused research and quality data analytics platform, translating clinical and research needs into scalable cloud-based data solutions. Guides vendor teams throughout evaluation and delivery, ensuring secure, high-quality integration of electronic health record (EHR) and related research data to support reliable analytics and decision-making.
Responsibilities:
I. Health Data Architecture and Platform Design
- Designs and implements a scalable, cloud-based data analytics architecture using Microsoft cloud technologies.
- Defines end-to-end data workflows across ingestion, storage (warehouse/lakehouse), transformation, analytics, and visualization layers.
II. EHR Data Ingestion and Integration
- Develops data ingestion pipelines from EHR systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner) and other clinical sources using Azure-native tools (e.g., Synapse pipelines, Fabric Data Factory, APIs, secure file transfers).
- Integrates data using healthcare interoperability standards and formats (e.g., HL7 v2, FHIR, flat files).
- Supports ingestion of registry, quality reporting, and operational datasets into a centralized analytics platform.
III. Clinical Data Engineering and Transformation
- Builds and maintains ETL/ELT pipelines within Synapse and/or Fabric to clean, normalize, and harmonize clinical data.
- Designs and implements lakehouse and warehouse data models optimized for ICU analytics and clinical reporting.
- Implements data quality rules, validation checks, and lineage tracking to ensure clinical accuracy and trust.
- Engages with stakeholders, including clinicians, for any requirements gathering and/or needs assessment.
IV. Analytics Enablement and Visualization
- Enables analytics and reporting by delivering curated datasets and semantic models consumable by Power BI and other BI tools.
- Supports development of ICU dashboards, quality metrics, and outcomes analytics.
- Partners with clinical, quality improvement, and research stakeholders to ensure analytics outputs align with ICU workflows and decision-making needs.
V. Data Governance, Security and Compliance
- Implements healthcare data governance best practices within Azure and Fabric, including role-based access, workspace management, and audit logging.
- Ensures compliance with healthcare privacy and security requirements (e.g., HIPAA).
- Establishes standards for documentation, monitoring, and operational support of data pipelines.
- Follows guidelines for data harmonization and principles.
VI. Subject Matter Expert (SME) Leadership and Collaboration
- Serves as the technical SME for Microsoft cloud-based healthcare analytics solutions.
- Advises on platform design decisions, tool selection, and best practices.
- Documents architecture, data models, and transformation logic to support sustainability and knowledge transfer.
- Engages with SCCM members on platform governance.
VII. Other Duties as Assigned to Carry out SCCM’s Mission and Goals
- Documents processes and procedures to assist with knowledge transfer and handoff expectations to support long-term sustainability.
Required qualifications
- Master’s degree in computer science, data engineering, health informatics, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- At least 5 to 7 years of experience in data engineering and/or data architecture, including substantial work with healthcare data
- Hands-on experience designing and implementing health analytics solutions using Microsoft cloud technologies (e.g., Azure Synapse, Microsoft Fabric)
- Strong experience building ETL/ELT pipelines and SQL-based transformations
- Experience integrating and transforming EHR and clinical data for analytics use cases
- Proficiency in SQL and at least one programming language (e.g., Python, R)
- Experience with Power BI, including building data models and reports for healthcare analytics
Preferred qualifications
- Experience supporting healthcare-related data analytics, particularly in clinical or quality improvement contexts
- Familiarity with common healthcare data models (e.g., FHIR, OMOP)
- Experience working with clinical registries, benchmarking programs, or quality improvement datasets
- Knowledge of security, networking, and identity management in regulated environments (e.g., HIPAA-covered or similar settings)
- Experience designing research-grade or reproducible analytics pipelines
- Demonstrated strength in stakeholder engagement and requirements gathering with clinicians, researchers, or operational leaders
