Position Overview:
The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist provides life-enriching activities to residents/patients of Winona Health. This individual’s initiatives will reflect the standards of the profession, Winona Health and conforms to the mission, philosophy, policies and procedures of the department. The individual will plan, organize and facilitate a comprehensive leisure program designed to meet the residents/patients interests and needs. This individual must be comfortable working with elderly/ disabled adults in a healthcare setting. The recreational therapist will plan and participate in specialized games, sports, crafts, and other leisure activities to help residents and patients restore capabilities and/or manage mental, emotional, and physical disabilities. The individual will play a key role in the department’s operations and quality improvement efforts.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- This person will provide oversight, instruction and guidance to interns making sure the department offers research based, up-to-date services.
- This individual will provide assist in providing supervision to all volunteers in order to create a positive experience for residents, volunteers and Winona Health.
- Assess the needs and capabilities of each resident/patient in order to maintain and or improve capabilities and preserve enjoyment of individual leisure pursuits, as well as physical and mental functioning.
- Assure that residents with varied needs and capabilities receive appropriate services to maintain highest level of well-being.
- This position will organize and facilitate outings and events including within the community.
- This position is responsible for completing required documentation in the resident or patients electronic medical record.
- This position will monitor the department’s quality and ensure appropriate resident/patient services and satisfaction and will assist the Supervisor with appropriate action plans if needed.
- Participates in Quality Improvement efforts as a part of everyday work.
- Completes and supervises competency testing with the facility bus.
Skills and Experience:
Required:
- This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Therapeutic
- Must obtain CTRS Licensure within 1 year of employment
- The individual will have good oral and written skills and feel comfortable working with the elderly/ disabled adults within a healthcare setting.
- Must have a good grasp of therapeutic recreation standards through professional groups and/or peers.
- Must complete van competency testing, hold a valid drivers license and be willing to drive resident/patient transport vehicle.
- Maintain competencies in the following: basic computer skills, Outlook, patient information databases (Cerner, EMR, American Data).
- Must obtain CNA / TMA Certification within 1 year of employment. (facilitated and paid for by Winona Health)
