Job Description

A Water Safety Instructor (WSI) teaches swimming techniques and water safety skills to diverse age groups and skill levels, adhering to curricula like the American Red Cross standard. They evaluate student progress, enforce pool safety rules, and maintain a safe, encouraging environment. Key requirements include WSI certification, CPR/first aid training, and strong communication skills. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Instruction: Teach swim lessons (group or private) for various levels, from, beginner to advanced, including children and adults.
  • Safety Enforcement: Enforce pool regulations, monitor safety, and intervene when necessary to prevent incidents.
  • Curriculum Development: Plan and execute lesson plans that cover water safety, stroke technique, and aquatic skills.
  • Assessment & Certification: Evaluate student abilities, track progress, and issue certificates upon completion.
  • Communication: Interact with parents/participants regarding progress and instruct students with patience.
  • Maintenance: Assist with setting up equipment and keeping the facility clean. 

Required Certifications and Qualifications

  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification (or similar accreditation).
  • Current CPR/First Aid/AED Certification.
  • Lifeguard training certification is often required or preferred.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to be in the water for long periods, demonstrate strokes, and lift individuals if needed. 

Typical Working Conditions

  • Work environments include swimming pools, community centers, and aquatic centers.
  • Must be able to maintain high alertness in loud, warm environments
