Job Description

About the Department

Responsible for performing skilled work in the inspection, operation, troubleshooting, maintenance, installation and repair of equipment in the areas of water and wastewater pump stations, water and wastewater treatment plants, water distribution systems and wastewater collection systems. Work is performed under general supervision of the WW Systems Supervisor.

Position Duties

  1. Responsible for performing skilled and semi-skilled tasks in inspection, maintenance and repairing equipment associated with the County’s Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection Systems to include water storage and pumping stations and lift stations.
  2. Responsible for performing skilled and semi-skilled tasks in inspection, maintenance and repairing equipment associated with the County’s Water Treatment and Wastewater Treatment Facilities to include all water and wastewater plants. 
  3. Inspects and performs daily maintenance; prepares routine reports and maintains daily records and logs. 
  4. Follows established preventive maintenance procedures regarding all phases of collection and distribution systems.
  5. Operates and maintains light maintenance service equipment including maintenance service truck, backhoes, dump trucks, trailers, loaders, wrenches, Torches, welders, pump alignment tools, and a wide variety of hand tools. – Uses sound judgment to recognize and report unusual conditions.
  6. Ensures job site safety through traffic control and equipment locations.
  7. Fills out work orders and submits requisitions for supplies.
  8. Monitors records, dials, and charts to determine conditions; performs routine adjustments in response to monitoring results. 
  9. Monitor, maintain and troubleshoot electrical and electrical equipment in and around Distribution, Treatment and Collection Systems. 
  10. Ability to enter into Confine Spaces.
  11. Maintains cleanliness of work area. 
  12. Provides valve and equipment adjustments.
  13. Responds to customers as result of quality-of-service concerns.
  14. Participates in emergency response and scheduled on call program. – Participates in emergency response programs. 
  15. Responds to after-hours emergency calls.
  16. Perform other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge in the repair of all systems in the utility service area. 
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions required in the workplace. 
  • Ability to input information into a personal computer. 
  • Ability to use sound judgment in detecting and correcting unusual conditions, or recommending repair scheduling. 
  • Ability to interpret drawings, schematics, and blueprints in performance of job duties. 
  • Skill in the proper use and operation of tools and machinery used in job tasks. 
  • Ability to follow oral and written Instructions. 
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. 
  • Ability to respond in a professional manner to complaints or inquiries from a variety of sources. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, subordinates and County officials. 
  • Basic knowledge of electrical control panels and troubleshooting. 

Other Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent; three (3) years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of training, education and experience.

Special Qualifications:

Must have a valid Florida driver’s license. Ability to meet state certifications that may be imposed in the future.

Work is primarily outside in various weather conditions that include dust, fumes, gases, chemical and oils. Work may be on uneven or slippery surfaces, near moving mechanical parts and occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibrations. May occasionally work in high precarious locations and may be occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, odors, extreme noise, odor, heights and risk of electrical shock. Noise levels in this work environment are usually loud in field settings and moderately quiet in office settings. Occasionally works in water and or wastewater liquids.
