TxDOT's Houston District is looking for an Assistant Transportation Engineering Supervisor to assist leading the Houston District's Bridge Design section. This position will assist overseeing the structural and geotechnical design of new bridges, retaining structures, and bridge rehabilitation for a variety of transportation projects throughout the Houston District's 6-county area. You will have the opportunity to manage and develop engineers, engineering assistants, and design technicians and to work with various other TxDOT sections as a team to complete transportation projects. Supervises personnel engaged in transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, design, construction, transportation/traffic operations, maintenance and bridge inspection. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials, private entities and contractors. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

Essential Duties:

  • Advises staff engineers.

  • Designs, sketches and recommends bridge repair procedures.

  • Develops and oversees laboratory and/or geotechnical consultant contracts.

  • Drives/travels to project/work locations to make on-site engineering reviews, analyses, tests and to provide technical support.
  • Makes presentations and represents TxDOT.
  • Performs, reviews and monitors detailed investigations, data collection, analyses and coordination of bridge related research and recommends cost effective project level design for new, rehabilitated and reconstructed bridges.
  • Prepares correspondence and reports.
  • Recommends transportation engineering training needs.
  • Represents the Department at meetings, conferences and related activities.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.

Experience: 4 years experience in transportation engineering. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Must have one (1) year supervisory/managerial experience. Project leader or lead worker experience may substitute for supervisory/managerial experience. 

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Licensed Prof Engineer*

     

  • For Bridge Inspection: Must have completed a comprehensive training course based on the Bridge Inspector's Training Manual or NICET Level III or IV certification in Bridge Safety Inspection within (1) year of date of hire. 

*Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Structural and geotechnical engineering experience; previous supervisor, project manager or lead worker experience. Ability to clearly and professionally communicate with internal personnel and external stakeholders.

    • Standards and specifications for bridges and other transportation structures

    • Fatigue and fracture mechanics

    • Bridge construction and evaluation methods, procedures and regulations

    • Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities

    • Structural engineering terminology, principles, practices and methods and the application of engineering theory

    • Applying engineering principles, practices, and methods in job responsibilities

      monitoring and measuring performance against goals; evaluating results and making necessary adjustments to meet deadlines
    • Planning, assigning, directing, coordinating and reviewing the work of professional, administrative and technical

  • Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that
    support business objectives and goals
