REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Qualified and able to perform the work of student instructional support, student living needs assistance, student
behavioral management, and student community-based support contained in the attached job responsibilities.
• Self-directed.
• High school diploma or successful completion of GED.
• Ability to establish and maintain positive, supportive relationships with students, parents, teachers, and
administrators, and ability to work as a part of a team.
• Ability to perform functions as defined by the student’s IEP.
• Ability to transport a student weighing at least 100 pounds.
• Ability to adapt to working with a variety of staff in a variety of settings.
• Willingness and appropriately dressed to go out for recess everyday (if needed).
• Ability to work well with others in a cooperative setting of staff.
• Regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Post-secondary coursework related to education or human service.
• Knowledge of adaptations useful to assist special education students.
• Basic computer competencies, knowledge, and ability to use office machines.
• Familiarity with special education disabilities.
• Knowledge of non-aversive behavior intervention techniques.
TESTING: The District will administer testing in the areas of reading, writing and /or mathematics for external
applicants. Such testing will be a qualification for any position to determine whether an applicant possesses grade level
competence for the position for which they are applying.
SPECIAL EDUCATION PARAEDUCATOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: A paraeducator assigned to special education students in
a classroom or special education students in a program. The special education paraeducator's general task is to assist
with various disability needs of special education students. While such needs will vary with each student(s) involved,
such needs may include:

• Student Instructional Support: assisting the teacher in planning and programming to achieve specific
performance objectives of students and to support the needs of students in the learning environment, which
includes, but is not limited to, tasks such as: individual instructional assistance and coaching, implementing one
to one instruction with a student, facilitating small groups of special needs students, assisting the classroom or
special education teacher as needed, assisting in testing, adapting* assignments (under the direction and
supervision of the student's teacher), grading student work, using adaptive equipment with a special needs
student, adapting* activities and/or materials for different levels of functioning (under the direction and
supervision of the student's teacher), deliver students prompts and cues, collect and report data regarding
student progress and behavior, communicating with parents (under the direction and supervision of the
student's teacher), participating in staff meetings and problem solving, model and demonstrate to students
appropriate responses, and other accommodations or adaptations* as identified in a student's IEP.
• Student Living Assistance: to support and assist the day-to-day living needs of students, which includes, but is
not limited to, tasks such as: assistance with bathroom needs, positioning student, cleaning, eating, medications,
and other physical daily living needs.
• Student Behavioral Management: to support and assist in the behavior management plans of students and the
creation and maintenance of a safe and orderly learning environment and dealing with special needs students
whose behavior disrupts the learning environment or threatens the health and safety of the special education
students, other students or staff, which includes, but is not limited to: handling disruptive students, including
such techniques as physically restraining students, and non-physical methods of behavioral control, referring
and taking students to the office for disciplinary reasons, and encourage peer-to-peer interactions with
students.
• Student Community-Based Support: to support and assist students in community-based programs, which
includes, but is not limited to: monitoring and assisting students in community-based work sites,
social/recreational activities, and in the acquisition of community services, including reflecting and
supplementing the goals in a student's IEP.
• As used in this document, adapting and adaptation means a change in the presentation of materials or in a
method of testing or student assessment. This is distinguished from the term modifying, which means a
change/alteration of curriculum to reflect a student's disability.
• Paraeducators are responsible for adaptation as indicated in this description. However, modification of
curriculum is a responsibility of teaching staff and not paraeducators.
