Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Indian Creek Plant, located in Townsend, MT, operates two rotary lime kilns and a hydrator. The Quarry Supervisor oversees all quarry activities, including drilling, blasting, crushing, road and ramp maintenance, load and haul operations, and contractor management as applicable. This role is accountable for safety performance, environmental compliance, feed stone quality, budget management, and execution of the mine plan.

 

The successful candidate will partner with the corporate mining/geology group to develop, maintain, and execute the mine plan. This position works closely with the kiln and maintenance teams to ensure safe operations, consistent quality, and maximum equipment availability. The Quarry Supervisor will achieve measurable results in safety, environmental compliance, quality, productivity, and financial performance through the effective use of people, resources, and equipment.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate is expected to take a hands-on approach and will be responsible for the following:

  • Maintain the highest standards of safety, environmental performance, quality, and operational efficiency in support of world-class performance.
  • Utilize the SC App to manage safety, environmental, inspections, and housekeeping activities and compliance.
  • Direct quarry production crews to achieve established business and production objectives.
  • Take an active role in the quality program including drill sample, crushed stone samples, stockpile management, crushed stone stockpiles, testing, and development of the stone blending program.
  • Effectively manage all contractors used in the quarry including load / haul, and blasting. Direct activities and monitor to require efficient operations and review time sheets and invoices for accuracy.
  • Ensure plant stone feed meets established quality standards by fully utilizing quality control systems and procedures.
  • Develop schedules and operating instructions for work areas to meet production and inventory requirements while adhering to the mine plan.
  • Manage onsite explosives. Ensure compliance with ATF regulations, Inventory management, ordering, and required reporting.
  • Coordinate and schedule required maintenance through the MEG program to keep equipment and facilities in top condition and optimize production flow.
  • Survey, stake, and establish roads, ramps, and new benches for mining areas.
  • Develop the annual operating and capital budget and manage quarry costs within budget targets.
  • Collaborate and work closely with the corporate mining and geology group to develop and execute short- and long-term mine plans.
  • Complete annual production reporting, including reclamation, disturbance, and extraction activities.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with MSHA, DEQ, BLM, and ATF regulations.
  • Evaluate projects and equipment improvements, providing technical and financial recommendations for capital expenditures, equipment selection, and replacement.
  • Train, coach, and develop employees to perform at a high level using the Graymont Operational Excellence System (GOES).
  • Follow strict safety procedures and recommend improvements as needed.
  • Participate in the leadership team on-call rotation; additional hours may be required periodically outside the normal workweek.
  • Effectively work with the National Guard to assure the safety of both guard activities and Graymont quarry.
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and sustain a strong safety culture.
  • Strong leadership skills with a proven ability to build and lead effective teams.
  • Self-directed, results-oriented, and highly motivated, requiring minimal direct supervision.
  • Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering or Geological Sciences preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience managing quarry operations, with demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills, including coaching, motivation, performance management, and addressing personnel matters.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong coaching and motivation abilities; effective organization, analytical, and decision-making skills; and a working knowledge of financial analysis and capital budgeting.
  • Strong mining knowledge and interpretation skills to solve problems and ensure consistent stone feed quality.
  • Strong computer skills, including JD Edwards (JDE), Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Office; experience with Carlson Civil planning software preferred.
  • Experience with JD Edwards (Oracle) or similar ERP systems.
