Engineer I
$67,000-$84,000 |  In-person | Duluth, MN

As an Engineer I at Minnesota Power, you’ll gain hands-on experience working on generation and capital projects, collaborate with experienced engineers and project teams, and build the skills needed for long-term growth in the electric utility industry.

What You’ll Do

  • Support the planning, design, and delivery of energy-related projects from initial concept through construction and closeout.
  • Assist with engineering design, analysis, and project coordination for generation facilities (thermal, hydro, wind, solar, energy storage), substations, and office facilities.
  • Contribute to small-scale projects by coordinating with internal teams and external consultants and contractors, with guidance from experienced engineers and project managers.
  • Help manage project scope, schedules, budgets, documentation, and change control to support successful project outcomes.
  • Participate on project and technical teams, gaining experience in engineering best practices and project execution while providing technical input as assigned.
  • Support construction and commissioning activities, including reviewing drawings, responding to field questions, and assisting with issue resolution.
  • Assist in evaluating, troubleshooting, and resolving preventative and corrective maintenance issues, including work related to advanced control systems.
  • Provide engineering support to internal departments, field personnel, and external partners as needed.
  • Promote continuous improvement through customer‑focused thinking, teamwork, and practical application of new technologies.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-AEC accredited program (power systems focus preferred).
  • Candidates completing their degree by June 30, 2026, will be considered.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. 
  • This position will report regularly, in person, to Duluth, MN.
  • Willingness to travel to various facilities and project sites; occasional after-hours and out-of-town travel required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in team-based environments.
  • This position may be subject to assessment of skills, job match and/or aptitude.

Preferred Qualifications

  • No experience required; utility engineering internship experience desired
  • Engineer-in-Training certification encouraged

Compensation & Benefits

The expected annual compensation range for this position is $67,000 - $84,000. Compensation offered to the selected candidate will vary depending on relevant knowledge, skills, training, experience, and market conditions.
