Join ALS Environmental – Hamilton, New Zealand

We are seeking an experienced Assistant Laboratory Manager to support the efficient, safe, and high‑quality operation of our Hamilton laboratory. This is a hands‑on leadership role suited to a technically strong professional with proven supervisory experience and a strong customer and quality focus.

Working closely with the Laboratory Manager and Production team, you will help manage workflow priorities, staffing levels, turnaround times, and technical reporting, while ensuring quality, safety, and compliance standards are consistently met.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support workflow prioritisation, turnaround time management, and load balancing

  • Manage staff resourcing, cross‑training, and day‑to‑day supervision

  • Provide technical support to clients and internal teams

  • Resolve sample, reporting, and turnaround issues across ALS sites

  • Maintain quality systems, audit outcomes, and continuous improvement initiatives

  • Ensure compliance with Health, Safety, and Environmental requirements

About You

  • Tertiary qualification in science (preferably Chemistry or related field)

  • Minimum 5 years’ laboratory experience, including 2 years in a supervisory role

  • Strong communication, organisational, and leadership skills

  • High level of computer literacy and attention to detail

  • Strong customer focus with sound understanding of business principles

  • Commitment to quality, safety, teamwork, and ALS values

Quality Responsibilities

  • Ensure all testing and tasks comply with ALS quality systems and procedures.

  • Maintain accurate records and ensure instrument maintenance is up to date.

  • Always uphold the integrity of data and laboratory processes.

Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)

  • Understand and comply with ALS HSE policies and laboratory safety procedures.

  • Follow appropriate precautions when working with samples of unknown hazard.

  • Report and address unsafe practices or environmental risks.

  • Actively contribute to a strong safety and sustainability culture.

  • Comply with all applicable OHS legislation.
