Substation Design Project Engineer, Waco, TX

We’re looking for a Substation Design Project Engineer to join our team of innovators, problem solvers, and trusted industry experts.

What You’ll Do
Design & Develop:
- Create, review or revise substation layouts, engineering drawings, system calculations, and specifications. Design projects in compliance with codes, standards, and safety regulations.
- Gain hands-on experience with electrical and civil applications, including steel structures, breakers, grounding, protective relaying, and foundation design.
- As a Civil Engineer, demonstrate the skill and ability to perform structural loading analysis, prepare foundation design and details, fully prepare station single line diagrams, perform equipment, fence and traffic circulation layout for the substation, interpret and apply electrical and structural design standards such as RUS 1724E-300, IEEE, NESC, AISC, ACI, and ASCE, and perform site grading and drainage grading design.
- As an Electrical Engineer, demonstrate the skill and ability to perform detailed electrical protection and control panels and circuits, full understanding of standby battery backup systems, thorough understanding of fault current principles, understanding of power factor correction, fully prepare station single line diagrams, perform electrical equipment specification and analysis, research, interpret, and apply electrical and structural design standards such as RUS 1724E-300, IEEE, NESC, and NFPA/NEC.
Plan & Analyze:
- Partner with member cooperatives, municipalities, contractors, and consultants to scope and deliver projects.
- Conduct engineering and economic analysis to support project decisions and budgets.
- Investigate new technologies and apply best practices in substation engineering.
Support & Collaborate:
- Provide technical expertise across departments such as ROW, Regulatory, Project Management, and Planning.
- Assist construction crews, suppliers, and inspectors to resolve field or design issues.
- Perform site visits, inspections, and testing of substations.
- Provide effective direction to others in a team-based environment
- Plan, direct and coordinate the activities of cross-functional teams.
What We’re Looking For
Education:
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical or Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited university required.
- Other ABET-accredited engineering degrees with specialized substation design experience may be considered.
- Six years of experience as an Engineer with Texas Registration as a Professional Engineer
Skills & Traits:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

- Ability to collaborate effectively across departments and with external stakeholders.
- Eagerness to learn and apply knowledge in high-voltage substation applications.
Professional Credentials:
Texas Professional Engineer (PE) license a plus; required for signing/sealing reports and drawings.
