General Summary:

The Charge Nurse coordinates shift activities through effective leadership in accordance with the departmental and hospital policies and procedures throughout the medical/surgical areas. Assists staff and other providers. Communicates effectively with team members and managers/supervisors. The shift charge nurse acts as a resource for clinical concerns, in relation to policy, and equipment and technology.

Essential Functions:

  • All essential functions of staff nurse position
  • Remains calm and approachable in stressful situations and demonstrates ability to make quick decisions.
  • Available to assist staff.
  • Recognizes level of performance and provides feedback (recognition or coaching in collaboration with the Department Manager).
  • Demonstrates effective leadership skills by promoting teamwork, initiating huddles and effective shift report.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills facilitating conflict resolution.
  • Acts as a liaison between team members, physicians and other departments.
  • Demonstrates time management and organization skills.
  • Demonstrates competence in use of technology and remains current on updates and changes.
  • Demonstrates ability to troubleshoot technology and equipment issues.
  • Complete Nurse Leader Rounding on patients as directed by the Department Manager.
