Job Description

Position Summary

The Next Step Navigator – East Region works closely with high school students to help them achieve their academic and career goals and prepare for academic and career possibilities after high school, with a focus on BMCC programming. This position is responsible for engaging high school students at Helix, Athena-Weston, and Milton-Freewater schools. They are responsible for evaluating individual needs, motivating students to work towards their goals, guiding them individually to appropriate career and academic resources, and monitoring their progress. The Navigator works closely with high school and college administrators, faculty, and staff to advance learning initiatives and coordinate institutional efforts that support high school students. This position will be housed at the BMCC Milton-Freewater Center. This position will require extensive travel.

 

Essential Functions

Offers one-on-one coaching related to academic success and personal and/or professional development with high school students.

Uses intentional conversations to determine the personal and professional goals of students, identifying potential challenges, and providing referrals to appropriate programs and services.

Provides students with goal-oriented guidance and steps to success and encourages students to actively participate in setting education goals and milestones while navigating challenges.

Practices proactive advising and facilitates follow-up sessions and feedback.

Communicates regularly with high school administrators, teachers, counselors, and staff as appropriate to support student needs.

Provides guidance to high school students through BMCC course offerings and other institutional learning opportunities.

Facilitates student admissions to BMCC, first-term advising, and course registration at the college as appropriate.

Provides placement consultation and intake as appropriate.

Collaborates with BMCC staff to provide appropriate academic plans, including co- and extra­ curricular activities, and referrals for students as appropriate.

Applies and adheres to the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge and understanding of Early College Credit programming. Knowledge and understanding of comprehensive advising best practices.

Knowledge and proficiency with learning technology systems typically used in K12 and higher education, such as a learning management system (LMS) or Student Information System (SIS).

Strong oral and written communication skills.

Ability to work confidentially with individuals and to conduct workshops, seminars, and trainings.

Strong knowledge of student support programs and the ability to make proper referrals.

Possess excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.

Ability to meet deadlines with attention to detail.

Ability to work independently, take initiative, and provide follow through. Ability to work effectively within a team.

Ability to work collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders.

Ability to assess student needs and discern best course of action.

Ability to effectively work in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, faculty, and staff.
