JOB SUMMARY
The Pharmacy Resident – PGY1 is a licensed pharmacist employed in a time-limited educational appointment within an ASHP-accredited postgraduate year one (PGY1) pharmacy residency program. The role provides structured, supervised professional practice experiences designed to develop competence in patient-centered care, medication-use systems, leadership, education, quality improvement and/or research.
The resident functions as a pharmacist under preceptorship and assumes progressive responsibility based on demonstrated competence, consistent with ASHP accreditation standards and Florida hospital practice requirements.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
– Other duties may be assigned.
· Clinical Practice and Patient Care
o Provide direct patient care services as part of an interprofessional healthcare team.
o Evaluate patient-specific data and identify medication-related problems.
o Review patient medication profiles for demographic completeness, drug interactions, therapeutic duplications, dosing, formulary compliance and therapeutic appropriateness
o Develop, implement, monitor, and adjust medication therapy plans.
o Monitor drug therapies via labs, vitals, cultures and pharmacokinetic parameters
o Dose and monitor medications under collaborative practice agreements where applicable
o Document interventions, consults, and pharmacokinetic monitoring
o Perform medication reconciliation
o Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and transitions of care.
o Provide medication education to patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals.
o Identify, prevent, and report medication errors and adverse drug events
o Participate in antimicrobial stewardship and other clinical initiatives
o Ensures compliance with regulatory governing bodies (i.e. TJC, CMS, Board of Pharmacy)
· Pharmacy Operations and Medication-Use Systems
o Participate in medication distribution and operational pharmacy services to support safe and effective medication use.
o Fulfill required staffing responsibilities, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as defined by the residency program.
o Support regulatory compliance, medication safety initiatives, and quality improvement activities.
o Utilize clinical information systems, automated dispensing technologies, and electronic health records.
o Supervise pharmacy technicians and workflow prioritization
o Ensure timely medication dispensing and stat turnaround
o Resolve dispensing discrepancies
· Education, Training, and Professional Development
o Participate in required learning experiences, longitudinal assignments, and residency meetings as defined by the residency program.
o Deliver formal and informal educational presentations (e.g., in-services, ACPE presentations) as defined by the residency program.
o Assist with experiential education and precepting pharmacy students as appropriate.
o Complete teaching and learning activities as defined by the residency program.
· Research and Quality Improvement
o Design, conduct, and complete a Medication Use Evaluation project
o Design, conduct, and complete a residency research project or quality improvement project.
o Collect, analyze, and interpret data
o Present project(s) outcomes internally and externally
o Prepare a written manuscript suitable for publication
· Leadership and Administration
o Participate in departmental committees and practice management activities as defined by the residency program.
o Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, ethical conduct, and effective communication.
o Support departmental initiatives aligned with institutional goals.
Additional (Optional) Duties and Responsibilities:
· Internal Moonlighting (optional): defined as any voluntary, authorized, compensated and independent clinical staff pharmacist work hours that are performed by the resident within the organization where the resident is completing their post-graduate training. These are compensated hours beyond the resident’s salary and are outside of the scheduled duty periods related to residency program training.
o Performs duties and responsibilities of an independent licensed staff clinical pharmacist (no preceptor supervision)
o Moonlighting is compensated at the institution’s defined hourly rate set for an entry level staff clinical pharmacist
o Pharmacy Resident-PGY1 eligibility for internal moonlighting is defined by the residency program.
o The Residency Program Director reserves the right to revoke approval for internal moonlighting at any time.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
· Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an ACPE-accredited college or school of pharmacy.
· Active Florida Pharmacist license OR eligibility for Florida licensure prior to start date.
· Florida pharmacist licensure obtained within the timeframe specified by the residency program.
· Eligibility for employment in the United States.
· ACLS, BLS and PALS certification or obtained within 90 days of employment
· Intermediate computer knowledge: Uses Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows
