Job Description

To perform skilled trade duties in the operation, maintenance, and
repair of buildings and related facilities and systems; perform related work.

This position is not eligible for new visa sponsorship at this time. Candidates who already hold valid U.S. work authorization may be considered.

Examples of Duties

1. Facility maintenance.

  • Electrical.
    -Maintains and repairs panels, circuits, wiring, and related systems.
    -Replaces switches, receptacles, ballast's, fuse boxes, heat systems, motors, fans and lights.
    -Repairs electric motors and extension cords.
    -Installs communication cable and telephone lines.
    -Assists journeyman electricians in new installations.
  • Plumbing.
    -Maintains and repairs plumbing fixtures, lavatories, faucets, sinks, tubs, water heaters and water service and drain lines.
    -Installs domestic, irrigation, and sprinkler systems.
    -Cleans/unclogs pipes, tanks, floor drains and sewers.
    -Cuts and threads or sweats pipe.
    -Repairs steam traps and pipes on heat systems.
    -Conducts preventive maintenance of plumbing and steam systems.
    -Assists journeyman plumbers in the installation and remodeling of plumbing systems.
  • Carpentry.
    -Installs ceramic floor and wall tile, linoleum, plastic laminate and similar products.
    -Repairs built-up, shake, shingle, and other roofs.
    -Patches holes in walls using sheetrock, plywood, tile, and plaster.
    -Reglazes windows.
    -Builds walls, partitions, benches, decks, and tables.
    -Sketches from oral instructions and works from drawings to design and build specialty items.
    -Builds and sets forms and pours and finishes concrete.
    -Builds fences and gates.
  • HVAC.
    -Maintains and repairs heating, ventilating, and air conditioning equipment such as air compressors, dryers, strainers, pneumatic and electronic controls and piping systems.
    -Insures water and steam coils, motors, belts, pulleys, condenser pans, duct work, dampers, and related systems are working properly.
    -Repairs fire alarm and pumping systems.

2. Miscellaneous.

            -Conducts preventive maintenance on building devices and systems.
            -Operates equipment used in building maintenance and repair.
            -Performs machinist work involving design and fabrication of specialized parts and equipment.
            -Welds and repairs and fabricates brackets, fixtures, and similar items.
            -Rebuilds motors and performs mechanical and preventive maintenance work on equipment.
            -Lays brick, stone, and block.
            -Removes debris from area.
            -Repairs appliances.
            -Responds to emergency call-backs.
            -Functions as leadworker over other maintenance staff and assists with general related trade duties.

Minimum Qualifications

 

Good knowledge of:

  • Carpentry, plumbing, electrical and general building maintenance.

Some knowledge of:

  • HVAC and mechanical systems maintenance.
  • Building codes.

Experience:

  • Performing skilled carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and building maintenance repair.
  • Using and maintaining tools and equipment normally associated with carpentry, mechanics, plumbing, and electrical work.
  • Reading blueprints and schematics.

Specialty Requirements

  • These positions at ISU require a valid standard driver's license.
  • These positions on the Pocatello campus require the ability to demonstrate successful completion of both a physical exam, including cardiopulmonary function testing and chest x-ray, and a respirator fit test.

Supplemental Information

  • Incumbents may work in all weather conditions and move in and around confined spaces. These positions are maintenance oriented.
  • When working under the supervision of a licensed journeyman in a respective trade area incumbents can be an apprentice in that specialty.
  • These positions involve lifting and carrying items weighing approximately 90 pounds, bending, stooping, shoveling, and climbing ladders.
  • Incumbents respond to emergency call-backs.
