Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)



 



General Summary: Under the general supervision of Medical Technologist or Laboratory Director, the MLT performs, interprets and correlates clinical laboratory procedures in a prompt, accurate, and reliable manner to assist physicians in patient diagnosis and treatment.



 



Essential Job Functions*:



• Demonstrates the ability to set priorities.



• Completes work assigned during shift.



• Maintains turn-around time standards in Emergency Department, timed, and STAT testing. Performs all testing in a timely manner.



• Maintains flexibility required to adapt to laboratory needs as related to testing and scheduling.



• Writes legibly and accurately, with complete documentation.



• Documents quality control procedures performed.



• Verifies the name of tube or specimen with requisition, and investigates abnormal results. Consults with appropriate personnel when test findings are abnormal and when difficulties are encountered in testing.



• Documents preventative maintenance performed.



• Ensures that supplies are available, and notifies appropriate personnel when low.



• Complies with OSHA and regulatory requirements by following established procedure in order to maintain a safe laboratory environment and meet accreditation standards.



• Correlates test results with diagnosis, and questions incompatible results. Correlates laboratory methods, procedures, and patient test results with agespecific population criteria, i.e. geriatrics, adults, pediatrics, and neonates.



• Demonstrates broad knowledge of all laboratory departments.



• Performs duties with minimal direct supervision.



• Demonstrates confidence in learning new routines and methods and assists others when asked.



• Complies with hospital and departmental policies, procedures, regulations and standards as related to job.



• Demonstrates hospital’s stated mission and values of teamwork, respect and communication with co-workers, patients, families and visitors.



• Actively and appropriately participates in problem-solving identification and resolution, both intra- and inter-departmentally.



• Meets department customer service standards and strives to enhance the level of customer service provided.



• Complies with hospital and departmental policies, procedures, regulations and standards as related to job.



• Demonstrates hospital’s stated mission and values of teamwork, respect and communication with co-workers, patients, families and visitors.



• Actively and appropriately participates in problem-solving identification and resolution, both intra- and inter-departmentally.

Qualifications:



• Education



Required: 1. Associate in Science degree in Medical Laboratory Technology. 2. ASCP, NCA, or other nationally recognized licensure.



 



• Work Experience Required: Internship in a hospital laboratory. Preferred: 2 years practical experience •



 



Licensure/Certifications/Registrations Required: Nationally recognized certification i.e. ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists), NCA (National Credentialing Agency), ASCLS (American Society of Clinical Laboratory Scientists).



 



Other Skills/Knowledge Must be detail oriented and organized; must be able to work under pressure; must have good manual dexterity and good color vision.
