Summary:
The Quality Engineer - BESS will plan, coordinate, and direct quality assurance programs on the manufacturing floor designed to ensure continuous production of products consistent with established customer requirements. This position will work closely with the manufacturing sites to ensure timely completion of a variety of quality improvement activities, with a primary focus on Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary quality owner for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), including cell, module, pack, and system-level components.
- Develop and maintain quality standards, inspection criteria, and validation processes specific to BESS products.
- Lead failure-mode analysis for BESS components and systems, including thermal, electrical, and mechanical failure mechanisms.
- Ensure compliance with relevant BESS safety, performance, and certification standards (e.g., UL 9540, UL 1973, NFPA 855, IEC standards).
- Oversee supplier quality for BESS-related materials and components, including audits, qualification, and ongoing performance monitoring.
- Support field quality investigations and reliability assessments for deployed BESS systems.
- Perform statistical analysis to identify trends, investigate issues, and conduct root cause analysis with cross-functional teams, recommending corrective and preventive actions.
- Develop and lead quality improvement projects based on prioritized metrics such as cost of quality, inspection data, and customer quality escapes.
- Prepare reports by collecting, interpreting, analyzing, and summarizing data, and present solution proposals to leadership.
- Perform quality audits and establish quality standards for incoming materials, in-process components, and finished products.
- Lead cross-functional teams in continuous improvement initiatives and support deployment across all sites when applicable.
- Report on complex quality analyses, defective products, and recommend necessary quality procedures and process changes.
- Ensure compliance throughout all quality testing, validation phases, and documentation processes.
- Provide technical leadership and assist in training teams on problem-solving techniques and quality tools.
- Support mitigation of customer complaints as part of a cross-functional response team.
- Review and manage nonconforming material disposition and inspection of reworked product.
- Support the product development process by providing key quality inputs and risk-based assessments.
- Facilitate, lead, and train teams in 8D, DMAIC, and 5-Why problem-solving methodologies.
- Assist manufacturing quality managers with RPN reduction, PFMEA enhancement, control plan development, and process flow improvements.
- Establish, analyze, and drive quality process performance across operations.
- Follow and promote strong safety practices aligned with Shoals objectives.
