Job Description

Job Title: Senior Design Engineer

Department: Engineering 

Accountability: This position reports to the Sr. Engineering Manager

Responsibilities

  • Lead project teams in the product development process
  • Design/engineer components & assemblies in 3D Solidworks CAD system to meet all functional & structural product requirements including manufacturability & assembly
  • Perform tolerance stacks and structural analysis as required to ensure designs meet requirements (Experience or knowledge of FEA (finite element analysis) preferred)
  • Prepare component & assembly detail drawings for release to supply base for fabrication
  • Develop parts lists/BOMs
  • Support prototype and production builds with hands-on support
  • Perform hands-on vehicle trim removal and product installation
  • Provide technical support to engineering, validation, purchasing, quality and production departments
  • Lead activities to perform root cause analysis of product and part issues
  • Operate a 3D scanner arm inside of a vehicle
  • Support company technical initiatives (e.g. – ISO compliance)
  • Mentor less experienced engineers on design techniques and best practices
  • Occasional work travel (~3 trips annually), primarily to Michigan for hands-on installations


Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline required.
  • Self-starter with 5-10 years design engineering/product development experience in a solid-modeling based CAD system (Solidworks preferred) 
  • Experience leading a project or team in a product development environment
  • Practical knowledge of GD&T (geometric dimension & tolerance), DFM (design for 

manufacturability) and DFA (design for assembly)

  • Mechanically inclined, technically savvy and possess the ability to multi-task in a demanding timeline driven position 
  • Experience and/or knowledge of the following manufacturing processes (in order of preference): 
    • Injection Molding and/or die casting 
    • Sheet metal fabrication and/or stamping 
    • Machining & turning 
    • Painting & plating of metal & plastic components 
  • Knowledge and use of SolidWorks surfacing preferred
  • Experience or knowledge of FEA (finite element analysis) preferred
  • Experience with SolidWorks large and advanced assemblies preferred
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Powerpoint, etc.) on a Windows based OS 
  • Strong written and oral communication skills 
  • Strong mechanical/hand tool skills desired.

  • Ability to regularly lift and move up to 25lbs. and occasionally up to 50lbs.
