Responsibilities
Position Purpose: The Registered Nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and coordinating patient care from admission to discharge. The Registered Nurse is responsible for the achievement of patient outcomes in accordance with the mission of the facility. To assist in the organization and daily function of the operating room in accordance with established federal, state, and Joint Commission regulations and Center policies and procedures. To assist Surgical Technologists and Physicians in direct patient care. To maintain a high standard of safety for the patient and staff members. Patient liaison for care rendered. Monitor stock levels, outdated supplies and equipment needs and report to Materials Management Coordinator. Serve as a role model and leader for Technologists and Nursing Assistants.

Position supervises: Surgical Technicians and Orderlies
Interpersonal Relationships
As a representative of FACILITY, all comments, attitudes, actions, and behaviors have a direct affect on the facility's image and perceptions of quality service. Interaction with patients, family members, physicians, referral sources, affiliating schools, visitors, etc. must be in a manner that is friendly, supportive, courteous, respectful, cooperative, and professional. This behavior should promote an atmosphere of teamwork congruent with facility standards and guidelines to promote positive relations, and set an example for the staff.
Essential Position Responsibilities
A. Job Knowledge
- Assesses, plans, evaluates and ensures the implementation of the patient's care to achieve identified outcomes.
- Assesses patient status on admission and on an ongoing basis.
- Implements appropriate standards of care based on assessment data and patient's own goals. Goals are mutually set with the patient and family
- Coordinates nursing interventions to enhance achievement of expected outcomes and to ensure readiness for discharge.
- Ensures provision of patient care daily in an organized and timely manner.
- Demonstrates ability to direct and provide for patient care in emergency situations.
- Evaluates patient's progress toward outcome achievement on an ongoing basis.
- Demonstrates ability to make decisions concerning facility based problems.
- Participates on quality council to facilitate improvement of nursing care and achievement of the mission of the facility, as requested.
- Participates in the orientation of nursing staff.
- Participates in developing standardized patient education programs, as requested.
- Participates in team conferences on assigned patients.
- Displays an understanding of each patient's cognitive, physical, emotional, and chronological maturity in the assessments, treatment, and care undertaken
- Demonstrates appropriate knowledge and competence of designated skills identified for position.
- Clinical Activities
- Participates in patient care activities and adheres to requirements of a Registered Nurse when providing direct patient care. This is demonstrated by:

- Demonstrates ability to supervise, orient, and coach nursing staff as evidence by:
- Ability to take charge of department when called upon
- Explains policies, procedures, and methods to staff who do not understand
- Assists in the orientation and training of new employees or employees in a new position
Resource and Inventory Management
- Ensures adequate supplies, medications, and equipment as evidenced by:
- Coordinates appropriate use of material resources being mindful of budgetary constraints
- Regulatory Compliance
- Complies with the State and Federal Rules and Regulations and AAAHC standards by:
- 100% of unusual occurrences or regulatory concerns are reported to the supervisor within 24 hours of discovery
- When patient injury or disaster occurs, administration is notified immediately
Safety
- Maintains nursing area in safe condition as indicated by cleared hallways secured electrical wiring, and removal/reporting of broken equipment promptly. Adheres to all facility safety regulations and guidelines regarding patient safety as evidenced by:
- Identifies, corrects and reports unsafe conditions immediately
- Monitors client safety and identifies, corrects and protects client from harmful/unsafe conditions
B. Productivity
- Follows established policies and procedures with regard to attendance.
- Maintains attendance according to guidelines and policy established by facility.
- Adheres to tardiness policy.
- Provides notification for unscheduled absences or tardiness in accordance with established departmental procedures as noted by supervisor.
- Requests scheduled time off according to procedure as noted by supervisor.
- Utilizes time effectively.
- Completes all documentation to ensure the availability of accurate and up to date information in accordance with established standards.
- Adheres to established facility safety requirements and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
- Demonstrates the competent usage of proper body mechanics in all activities.
- Identifies potentially unsafe situations and notifies supervisor.
- Completes all employee/patient incident documentation in a thorough and timely manner, as required by facility policy.
- Demonstrates complete understanding of established emergency procedures for facility.

- Completes appropriate financial management responsibilities.
- Provides input re: equipment needs/supply needs.
- Completes patient charges in accordance with facility procedure.

- Demonstrates the safe operation of equipment and machinery and follows procedures for reporting and correcting an unsafe situation.
- Understands that radiation exposure with the appropriate equipment and safety measures will happen in some orthopedic surgeries
D. Service Satisfaction
- Communicates patient information to assure confidentiality and continuity of care.
- Documents all patient information according to established standards of care, policies and procedures.
- Provides a shift report to oncoming personnel which is accurate, concise and pertinent to the patient's condition and response to care.
- Provides pertinent patient information to the physician, family and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
- Reports patient’s status at staffing conference based on analysis of collected data.
- Discusses patient information with other health team members in an appropriate environment.
- Documents patient's/significant other's response to teaching interventions.
- Interacts with all patients, families, visitors and fellow employees in a mature, responsible manner to ensure a positive and professional facility environment.
- Displays a caring and responsive attitude and conducts all activities respecting patient, family and employee rights and expectations.
- Maintains confidentiality of all facility and patient information as required by facility policy.

F. Attendance
- Follows established surgical facility policies and procedures with regard to attendance.
- Maintains attendance according to guidelines and policy established by facility
- Adheres to tardiness policy
- Provides notification for unscheduled absences or tardiness in accordance with established departmental procedures as noted by manager.
- Requests scheduled time off according to procedure as noted by supervisor.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Work is indoors in climate-controlled environment. Patient care environment with potential exposure to unpleasant odors, to blood and body fluids that may carry infection, to infectious disease, and to chemical and electrical hazards. Occasional exposure to outdoor climate.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Physical requirements for the position include the ability to frequently hear and communicate orally, see up close and at a distance, read and comprehend, stand, sit, walk, reach, handle, and feel objects. Ability to climb, pull, push, and kneel. Ability to push a stretcher/wheelchair with a patient. Ability to lift/transfer patients in excess of 100lbs. Ability to wear lead apron and push heavy equipment.
DEGREE OF SUPERVISION PROVIDED TO POSITION:
Minimal. Must be self-directed and able to work independently.
Qualifications
Position Requirements
Licenses or Certifications: Current licensure to practice in the State of Ohio. Successful completion of Basic Cardiac Life Support Course; ACLS preferred and PALS preferred.
Education, Vocational Training and Experience
Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing. Current ACLS preferred and PALS certificate preferred.
Experience
Minimum of 2 years of experience in perioperative nursing preferred.
