Position Title: Senior Mechanical Engineer

Target Experience: Senior Level (10-20 years)

Department: Mechanical Engineering

Location: Trafford, PA

Cleaveland Price is seeking a self-motivated Senior Engineer to lead our current interruption product line. You will train under a current subject matter expert to become the new expert in our interrupting devices. A background in kinematics or high voltage interruption is preferred. Responsibilities include new design efforts and supporting the existing product line.

About Us

Cleaveland/Price specializes in the design and manufacture of high voltage disconnect switches and switch automation products.  The products that we offer are unique in design, and some include patented features. Products have been developed and tested in accordance with IEEE, ANSI, and NEMA standards for high voltage equipment. They are primarily used by investor-owned and public electric utilities and large industrial operations in substation, distribution, transmission, and generation applications.

All company operations take place in a modern 218,300 sq. ft. multi-site facility situated on 20 acres east of Trafford, PA. The facility houses virtually all resources for product realization, including engineering, supply chain, parts fabrication, electro-mechanical assembly, and testing. Fabrication capabilities include laser and plasma cutting, CNC machining, CNC punching, and automated bending and forming. The company also utilizes specialized processes, such as MIG and TIG welding, friction welding, silver and tin electroplating, and silver brazing.

Cleaveland/Price’s employee-focused culture plays an important role in being recognized by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette as being a Top Workplace in the Pittsburgh region. The company is driven by the caring people that we employ: the heart and soul of the Cleaveland/Price product line.

Your Goal

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer at Cleaveland/Price, your primary goal will be to contribute and lead in the advancement of various disconnect switch product lines.  You will be responsible for designing, analyzing, and testing key mechanical components, assemblies, and systems, focusing on both tactical and strategic goals.  Your expertise will be required when designing structural components, electrical contacts and linkages for both new and existing products.  Your sound knowledge of mechanical engineering principles will allow you to analyze and vet-out your own designs throughout the prototyping phase, while also providing technical recommendations to project managers and guidance to fellow engineers.  Additionally, we would like you to have the ability to produce your own drawings, and when working on a larger project, partner with a drafter as needed.  Finally, this individual is comfortable working in a hands-on environment, testing and validating products, ensuring they meet all applicable standards.  This comprehensive skillset makes you a valuable asset and leader in our engineering development team.

Your Responsibilities

Under the direction from a supervisor or a more experience engineer, you will:

  • Define specifications for features and functions on new products, in addition to enhancements on existing products.

  • Design, develop, analyze and test innovative, cost-effective solutions that align with Cleaveland/Price manufacturing philosophy and capability.

  • Document projects and designs by creating CAD drawings, technical reports, test plans, and design review presentations.

  • Assist in assembling prototype switch products and mechanical switch assemblies, in house or at an external test lab.

  • Lead the investigation of technical problems and the creation of procedures, processes, and corrective actions to avoid recurrences.

  • May be a subject matter expert in a related product area.

  • Assist the supervisor and more experienced engineer in assigning work to various members within the team.

  • Contribute to defining the processes and methods that fellow engineers and technical staff follow to complete their day-to-day activities.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
