POSITION TITLE: SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST
PAY GRADE: Per Union Contract
UNION: Milford Education Association
SUMMARY/GOAL OF POSITION:
To facilitate the learning process through the effective application of diagnostic,
teaching and consultation skills.
INSTRUCTION: (Illustrative not inclusive)
● Evaluates behavior on the basis of clinical observations, interviews with
students, teachers, other school staff and parents, reports of other
professionals, review of school records and test results;
● Analyzes the psycho-educational strengths and needs of the individual child;
● Provides educational, vocational and personal recommendations based upon
psycho-educational evaluations of individual needs;
● Interprets findings to teachers to assist them in working effectively and
sensitively with their students in order to strengthen academic progress;
● Advises and counsels parents in order to facilitate the educational progress of
their children;
● Plans and implements non-biased assessment practices;
● Has thorough knowledge and understanding of administering a wide variety of psychological and psycho-educational assessments.
ORGANIZATION:
● Receives and processes referrals from school personnel, community
agencies, families, and students;
● Refers to the PPT those students whose problems appear to significantly
interfere with school performance;
● Works with school team to coordinate Planning and Placement Team
meetings;
● Understands and facilitates compliance with all laws, procedures and
requirements related to the PPT process;
● Maintains records, minutes, master lists and related paper work as required
by law and Department of Pupil Personnel Services procedures;
● Counsels students as mandated through the PPT process;
● Monitors implementation of programs recommended by the PPT;
● Facilitates the team’s development of plans for individualizing educational
programs for students;
● Works closely with the Director of Pupil Personnel Services and Secondary PPS Supervisor to ascertain successful execution of all therapeutic and PPT responsibilities;
● Consults with staff members to improve the classroom environment according
to students’ individual and group needs;
● Recommends strategies, techniques and materials to enhance instructional
improvement for all students;
● Identifies and assesses the social/emotional needs of students in order to
make recommendations to enhance the overall learning environment of the
school;
● Develops short-term counseling plans for students referred by school
personnel, community agencies, parents and students;
● Identifies and assesses the social/emotional needs of students in order to
make recommendations to enhance the overall learning environment of the
school;
● Aids in identification of students at risk, participating in the development of
treatment strategies;
● Maintains appropriate records of service provision;
● Serves on the Early Intervention Team, Crisis Team, and Student Assistance
Team as required;
● Regularly uses technology to assist in accomplishing job responsibilities and
meeting school and district goals;
● Experience with CT-SEDS system and documentation;
● Experience facilitating PPT meetings and coordinating the referral process.
PROFESSIONAL:
● Implements Board of Education and school policies and rules governing
student life and conduct;
● Promotes and upholds goals and objectives of the Board of Education and
school;
● Provides for appropriate student and parent advocacy;
● Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment,
materials and facilities;
● Cooperates with colleagues, administrators and other staff members;
● Demonstrates an on-going interest in educational concerns and professional
growth;
● Upholds the ethics of the teaching profession and of the social work
profession as defined in the code of ethics of the National Association of
School Psychologists;
● Maintains confidentiality regarding personal student and family information;
● Promotes the educational program to the community;
● Maintains high standards for personal attendance and punctuality so that
student achievement is not adversely impacted;
● Performs other tasks and responsibilities as delegated by the Principal, Secondary PPS Supervisor, or Director of Pupil Personnel Services.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of subject(s) taught; thorough knowledge of elementary,
secondary or special education principles, practices and procedures; thorough
knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching; thorough
knowledge of school division rules, regulations and procedures; ability to
establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to deliver articulate oral
presentations and written reports; ability to establish and maintain effective
working relationships with staff, students, administration, and parents.
QUALIFICATIONS:
● Must have a Master’s degree from an accredited college or
university;
● Prior job related experience required.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
Valid Connecticut Teaching Certificate (#070) for appropriate level of instruction and/or
subjects, which must satisfy the definition of “Highly Qualified” status for
content area assignment.
