Job Description

The Office of Water Quality’s Compliance Assessment and Reporting Section is seeking to fill an experienced Environmental Professional position. We are looking for candidates with advanced technical expertise and a strong background in water quality, hydrology, and environmental science.

The ideal candidate thrives in a deadline-driven environment, demonstrates sound professional judgment, and possesses strong communication skills to effectively engage with a wide range of stakeholders. This role involves compiling, analyzing, and interpreting water quality and hydrologic data, ensuring compliance with environmental permits and standards, and providing technical guidance to support water resource management decisions.


Key Responsibilities

•    Prepare and contribute to annual permit compliance reports for South Florida Water Management District projects, including analysis of hydrologic and water quality monitoring data to assess compliance with permit conditions and state water quality standards.

•    Perform water quality and hydrologic analyses, including nutrient load calculations, to evaluate project performance and support compliance assessments.

•    Respond to time-sensitive requests for water quality and hydrologic data analysis related to water management operations, storm events, and construction activities.

•    Analyze and interpret water quality, surface water flow, stage, and rainfall data to support compliance assessments and operational decisions.

•    Summarize, document, and communicate technical findings through written reports and presentations for internal teams, regulatory agencies, and external stakeholders.

•    Use data analysis tools such as Microsoft Excel, Python / R, and SQL to extract, manage, and analyze environmental datasets, ensuring data quality, consistency, and transparency.

Preferred Qualifications

•    Demonstrated experience preparing annual permit reports for water management and restoration projects.

•    Strong understanding of surface water hydrology, nutrient transport, and load calculations.

•    Experience working with large environmental datasets, including quality control, validation, and interpretation of water quality and hydrologic data.

•    Advanced skill in data analysis tools such as Microsoft Excel (advanced functions), Python / R, and SQL.

•    Demonstrated ability to develop modern dashboards and data visualizations that track monitoring data, support compliance assessments, and communicate project performance.

•    Familiarity with Florida water quality standards, permit conditions, and regulatory reporting processes.

•    Experience communicating technical findings to non-technical audiences, including regulators, project managers, and stakeholders.

•    Knowledge of South Florida hydrologic systems, including canals, STAs, reservoirs, and Everglades restoration projects.

License(s) / Certification(s): 
Valid State of Florida Driver's License required.
Requires a valid Engineer-In-Training certification, and candidate must work towards and attain a State of Florida Professional Engineer (PE) License.
 
Physical Requirements/ Working Environment:
Due to the District's response role and in the total scope of emergency management, this position may at times, be required to provide support before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies.
