Job Description

About the Department

Under the leadership of the Pool Manager and Head Lifeguards, Lifeguards are responsible for providing a safe environment at the Sun Prairie Family Aquatic Center.   Lifeguards will scan and watch the pool and swimmers, perform rescues and assists when needed, warn swimmers of dangerous practices and enforce the rules and regulations of the pool and facility.

Dates Needed:  June - August
Hours:  20 – 40+ hours/week.  Hours are flexible, Monday – Sunday between 6:30 am and 8:30 pm, lifeguarding for a variety of programs such as swim team practices, swim lessons, open swim, exercise classes and special events.

Special Note: 
The Sun Prairie Family Aquatic Center is undergoing a major renovation and will open to the public on July 9, 2026. While the opening is later than a typical season, we will begin paid training in early June to ensure staff are fully prepared for opening day.

This season offers a unique opportunity to be part of the opening team for a completely reimagined aquatic facility. The renovation includes updated bathhouse facilities, concession stand, offices, lifeguard room, a facility-wide speaker system, and new pool features such as a climbing wall, family-friendly slide, aqua zipline and interactive play structures.

Staff will benefit from additional training time, team building, and the chance to help set the tone for a fresh start season in an amazing, newly renovated facility, inside and out.

Position Duties

 Major Duties/Essential Functions
  • Supervise and ensure a safe pool environment for all pool patrons through American Red Cross Lifeguarding skills and best practices
  • Correct any violations of rules in a courteous, yet assertive manner
  • Perform first aid, CPR and utilize AED as needed
  • Enforce safe operation of waterslide, raindrop, geyser fountains, overhead water spray and drop slide water features
  • Perform open/closing procedures such as safety checks and inspections, light pool upkeep, etc.
  • Complete necessary reports such as attendance checks, inspection forms, opening/closing checklists, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned
 Minor Duties/Responsibilities 
  • Attend weekly staff meetings and in-services
  • Conduct swim tests as needed
  • Assist in coverage for employee absences for lifeguard shifts and swim lessons

Minimum Qualifications

Experience/Education:

  • Must be 15 years or older
  • Must hold a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification prior to June 1, 2025
  • One year of lifeguarding experience preferred
Skills, knowledge or abilities needed:
  • Experience working in an aquatic facility setting is desired
  • Knowledge of emergency lifesaving procedures in an aquatic setting
  • Ability and willingness to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions
  • Ability and willingness to perform a variety of tasks
  • Ability and willingness to keep accurate records and complete all necessary paperwork
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public in a courteous and tactful manner
  • Provide clear communication to and from supervisor and the public
  • Regular and punctual attendance.
  • Attend staff meetings and training sessions
