Maintenance Assistant

Location: The Sentinel of Amsterdam
Department: Maintenance
Reports To: Maintenance Director / Executive Director

Position Summary

The Maintenance Assistant is responsible for supporting the overall maintenance, safety, cleanliness, and appearance of the community. This role helps ensure the building, grounds, equipment, and resident areas remain in excellent condition while providing a safe and comfortable environment for residents, staff, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with routine maintenance and repair of the building, apartments, common areas, and grounds

  • Perform basic plumbing, electrical, painting, carpentry, and HVAC-related tasks as needed

  • Conduct daily inspections of the property to identify maintenance or safety concerns

  • Respond promptly to maintenance requests from residents and staff

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of maintenance areas, storage rooms, and workspaces

  • Support preventive maintenance schedules for equipment and building systems

  • Assist with seasonal maintenance such as snow removal, salting walkways, landscaping, and outdoor upkeep

  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, fire codes, and company policies

  • Help coordinate vendor visits and outside contractor work when necessary

  • Maintain accurate maintenance logs and work order documentation

  • Participate in emergency response procedures and on-call maintenance support if required

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred

  • Previous maintenance, facilities, or handyman experience preferred

  • Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, painting, and carpentry

  • Ability to safely operate maintenance tools and equipment

  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills

  • Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds

  • Reliable, organized, and able to work independently

  • Strong communication and customer service skills

  • Experience in senior living, healthcare, or residential communities is a plus

Schedule

  • Full-time / Part-time based on community needs

  • Some weekends, holidays, and on-call availability may be required
